stops to win the race convincingly.
the load of beer on board considerably
lightened by the end of the race.
The overall result was that we
"walked off" with not only the Regatta
Cup, but also the Passage Race Trophy,
returning triumphant to Wolfenbtlttel.
to surprise our critics.
The RAC Regatta took place from
Kiel in August, and it was a confident
team. complete with skipper this time.
who sailed over the start line on day
one. Sadly, it seems we must have
peaked too early in the season, with
our surprising success in the l Armd
Div. Regatta, and our win was not to
be repeated. Despite the efforts of the
crew to lighten the payload on board
by “disposing" of a couple of cans of
ale each night at the crew debrief. we
were only ever in close competition
with the l7/2lst Lancers; that was for
last place!
At the end of the regatta we were
presented with the coveted Wooden
Spoon Trophy, for the second year
running, by Brigadier David Williams
(even Capt. Alan Abraham, “our man
on the Committee Boat" couldn't help
us). We were. however, congratulated,
again for the second year running. for
having the best morale. The team
consisted of: Sgt "salty sea dog" Morgan
(skipper), LI John Tyszkiewicz, Tpr
Derek Sloan, and LCpl Bill Williams.
it is hoped to enter the RAC Regatta
again in 1987 from Wimbish. It must
rate as one of the most enjoyable
events of the year — will we return
victorious to Carver Barracks, or as
holders of the Wooden Spoon for a
record third year? Watch this space .....
Swimming
An attempt to revive the fortunes
of the regimental swimming team in
86/87 met with only partial success.
Lt Charrington and his volunteers,
inspired by the synchronized swimming
displays at the Olympics and the nearly
Skipper a salty seadog Morgan and Tpr Buggy Sloan battle with the elements
naked flesh at the local Stadt BAD
Wolfenbilttel, decided to take on the
might of 7 Armoured Brigade. Un-
fortunately at the time fixed for the
Brigade meet half the Regiment were
on Block Leave so D Squadron and
the Army Catering Corps ended up
representing the Regiment. The day
started well with very good results in
the heats, however the small number
of swimmers and consequent ‘doubling
up' meant that by the time of the finals
most members had already raced three
or four times that day. lnevitably a few
sinkings and near drowning: with only
five metres to go, meant that the
promise of the heats was not totally
fulfilled and the swimmers did well
to finish halfway up the table, It further
transpired that because of the depleted
state of the Regiment we could have
entered as a ‘minor unit'. though the
loss of face in doing so, would have far
outweighed the pale glory of winning
in that category. Better to be a small
fish in a big pool than a big one in a
little pooll?
1987 has produced hopes for a
significant challenge to be mounted
against 19 Brigade; two local pools
providing good training facilities. Again
it will be a single Squadron affair with
only A Sqn around. as the rest of the
regiment will be on troop training an
equally creditable performance is hoped
for.
