Rugby - We have a cupl The Regiment has won the RAC Trophy for the first time since it was presented in I962! lt is a great achievement which must in the main be attributed to the two years hard work put into the team by our last doctor Captain John Keeling, AQMS Ken Harries, and Cpl Frank Bilyard all of whom should he well satisfied with the result of their hard work We thank them all for our first major sports trophy for many a year. For those of you who do not know the story. I shall take this opportunity to describe how it was done, The RAC trophy is competed for annually by all RAC Regiments in Germany. usually starting as soon after Christmas as the weather will permit. As many know this can be as late as April and 1987 was no exception Having given 2] Engineer Regiment a worrying moment or two in the Army cup in the Autumn, we were confident that we could go all the way in the RAC Cup. (2] Engineers are a rugby packed Regiment that went onto the final of the Army Cupl) Sadly, the weather closed in and we were unable to train outside. let alone play the first round until the snow cleared on March 21. Two of our team had gone to Wimbish in the advance party and time was running out for the rest. as the main party was due to leave on April 6. At this stage we had our first hit of luck in that the "Skins" had to pull out due to training committments and we got a bye to the second round against the Blues and Royals. The team travelled to Sennelager and in a hard fought match which was 0—0 at half time we eventually won 18—1 Con- stant pressure against one of the best packs in the competilion eventually paid off and tries by Thomas and Milson proved decisivet We were through to the semi-final against the OOH. On Tuesday March 31 we returned to Hohne and ably supported by our Lt Pooley jumping high with some help from Cpl Phil Ducker |
