THE 9TH/IZTH ROYAL LANCERS REGIMENTAL JOURNAL The exercise season this year com- prised Grand Canyon, the Corps Reece exercise, we were umpires: 22 Armoured Ede work up training (rained off) and Ex ETERNAL TRIANGLE where we were Blue forcesr Grand Canyon went off well and much experience was gained from watching the antics of those we umpired (predominantly QDG and the TA Reece Regiments). Communications were stretched. often over 60-80 miles, yet everything worked which was a credit to the Squadron operators. The rainy period is probably best forgotten, except for the 100 miles an hour storms that blew down D Sqn tents but passed us as we sheltered in the lee of a Sportshallel Cpl Wheeldon helping Tpr Kearney hang around Then on to Eternal Triangle which started well with the Squadron picking out the major advancing formations then. finding a river behind the enemy front line in order to rejoin our Brigade. After that we withdrew miles. back to the Mohne See. before advancing once again to the Weser. The final operation was to attempt to get our Brigade back over the Weser, despite our best efforts as traffic controllers we were thwarted by a combination of recalcitrant RMPs and Sappers. They kept closing the bridge every time someone showed an inclination to cross it. We were very happy to return to barracks after a long period in the field. Sgt Saxton Shortly after that the Sqn said fare- well to Major Short and welcomed Major Lindsay. Sgt Proctor was also seen off in style and the Squadron settled down to prepare for the Christmas festivities, which rendered most of us oblivious to the World for long periods at a time. We wish Major and Mrs Short well and thank them for their care of the Squadron. * .l. |
