Regiment 9th/12th Lancers
Year 1987
Transcription W0s and Sgts Mess
The end of another year {or the Mess,
A year of many strange new faces,
rather older new faces, structural
changes, fond farewells and a Regi-
mental Move.
The year started with Spring Probex
and the usual influx of French and
American guests. Stimulating late-night
comparisons of the strengths or weak
nesses of various brews and the exchange
of various items of clothing were the
rule of the day.
In June a contingent of the Italian
Army came for seven days and held an
"Italian Night“ in the Mess. As a point
of interest the Italians actually like
RAOC “Bread"; proving how strange
they are. Due to various renovations in
the Mess, it was not until August that
we “dined out" Lt Simpson, who.
having had so long to prepare his
farewell speech, delivered one of the
longest on record.
The Mons Moy Ball held in September
took place in the Gymnasium. due to
the large number attending. Amazing
what the addition of a few parachutes
and pieces ol‘ hessian can achieve in
transforming a gymnasium. It proved
a great event enjoyed by all. The
normal round of social events and
parties was followed by the parade,
probably the most important event in
the Regimental Calendar.
October saw the presentation of LS
5t GC Medals to several Mess members
by Maj Gen A R G Mullins OBE. Comd
l Armd Div.
in November the Seoond-inJCommand
Maj W H Wright was dined out in
style. in addition, a contingent from
HMS Brazen visited the Regiment and
we held an Inter—Squadron Mess games
night. This included an interesting
“Trivial Pursuits“ game won by SSgt
Melville’s team (SSgt Melville provided
the game board and questions!).
November saw the presentation of
more LS and GC Medals by Brig D A
Williams (Comd Armdi)
THE WH/IZTH ROYAL LANCERS KEGIMENTAL JOURNAL
W0! Pegram. SSgt Dickson and Sgt Rowland received their LS&GC medals
from Brigadier D A Williams
The Christmas Draw. an outstanding
function, took place on 5 December
again held in the Gymnasium (trans»
formed for the occasion on a Christmas
theme). An exciting cabaret included
knife-throwing and snake charming
with audience participation! 1
The Mess Snooker Final aroused
much interest with a fine win by Gary
Malsher over Dave Dixon overseen,
in usual style, by MC Fred Davis
in his own version of MC dress.
January saw the dining out of Maj
Morpeth (now of literary fame). In
March yet more LS & GC Medals were
presented by Brig D A Williams Comd
Armd.
The Regimental move precluded any
further functions, but I am sure that all
the Mess members are looking forward
to our stay in Wimbish,
