Regiment 9th/12th Lancers
Year 1987
Transcription THE 9Tl-U12TH ROYAL LANCERS REGIMENTAL JOURNAL
I would ride work for February in
exchange for some tuition and so get
to know the horse. This plan worked
well right up to the race day.
The race itself was well supported
by the regimental officers. 0n the
first circuit all was looking good as we
held third place, tucked away on the
inside. However disaster struck on the
far side over the second railway fence.
on the second circuit as Turn Blue
took off a stride earlier than expected.
He hit the fence and ”peeked" on
landing. It was here that Lt Wilson
fell out the “side door", to be recovered
by the Course Doctor, suffering only
from injured pride. A great shame with
only six fences to go, having been up
with the leading pack including ‘Special
Cargo’. ‘Burnt Oak’ and ‘Maori Ven-
ture’ {who won the National a month
later).
Polo
Unfortunately the Regiment’s Polo
players were defeated by the isolation
of Wolf enbttttel so no polo was played
in Germany in 1986. Lt Hercock was
fortunate enough to be posted to
Cyprus in September with the challenging
task of helping to run the polo club.
This post ensured that he had plenty
of polo every week and he was lucky
enough to be included in a tour to
Jordan. After a wonderful week the
team returned very happy but sadly,
the losers; without a gold watch!
The future at Carver Barracks how-
ever looks rosy. There is a small civilian
club which plays on the Airfield and a
military polo club at Colchester.
Several officers are busy pursuing this
noblest of sports and we look forward
to challenging the Old Comrades at
Mons/Moyl
Volleyball
During the 1986-87 season the Regi»
mental Team won the BAOR Champion-
ship for the fifth time. We left Germany
as reigning champions, a nice way to
leave!
The main event of the year however
was the Inter Squadron competition.
The Martin Biela Trophy was played
for, for the first time. B Squadron were
hot favourites having a very strong side.
In the prelims B Squadron won all four
games 2—0. This qualified them for the
final against A Squadron. The standard
of volleyball was very high and the
match was played at a tremendous
pace. Cpl Corbin played some brilliant
touches and lead his team to a 3—2 win
after a mammoth 21/; hour match. A
Squadroa had won the volleyball
competition. for the sixth time.
The Regimental Team is now trying
to join a local league. The 198'!
Squadron competition will be held in
May. Any new players will be welcome
to the Regimental training sessions.
Come along and join a successful team.
The team now consists of:
Sgt Saxton
Sgt Williams
Cpl Corbin
Cpl Woods
Cpl Evison
Cpl Ford
Cpl Pilcher
Tpr Mitchell
Tpr Ramsden
