'4 vocal busload of 9th/12th Lancers we won the game scoring the only four points (Thomas) H) minutes from time. Much rejoicing was to be short lived. as we realised that the other half of the draw was way behind, and that the Regiment would have completed its move to England, taken 3 weeks block leave and have started Cyprus training in earnest before the opposition for the final would be ready. How were we to get back to Germany when money was so short in the Army and travel unlikely to be authorised? What effect would block leave have on the fitness of the Squad? Most worrying of all, what about the cricket season? We were told that the match would be on the 20 May in Sennelager and that it was up to us to be there. We had visions of a long journey in an Army white bus rendering us completely useless on an-ival, when Colonel Brennan came up with flights for the 19 and 21 May and we were all set. After two weeks intermittent training during which time two of our olayers were injured, (Cpl Woods playing volleyball and Cpl Bilyard trying to kick Lt Wade Pooley,) we travelled to Germany to join up with the three members of our old LAD who were being allowed to play as they had been with us for the first three rounds AQMS Ken Harries then proceeded to whip us into shape with his special brand of last minute training on the night before the match and we were satisfied that we had done as much as possible towards giving the l7th/215t Lancers a good game the following day. The opposition were understandably very confident as they had a very good Rugby record to our non existent one, and the mood in their changing room before the match reflected this con- fidence. Our skipper, Harries, gave us one of the best pre match talks that I have heard and we went out prepared to give everything for our Regiment. THE 9TH/IZTH ROYAL LANCERS REGIMENTAL JOURNAL Cfn ‘Rick the Pig' Whitaker breaks through There was a strong wind blowing down the length of the pitch and we played against it first. Needless to say we spent a lot of that half, in our half, and we realised that we would have to defend like demons against a team that looked better than any other we had faced. Their place kicker had a bad day and we went into the second half with no score. The Regiment then played some of the best rugby yet seen to score one try, and have two disallowed, one due to the referee being unsighted, and the other because the ball apparently was put on a foot and not the ground. Nevertheless with Tpr Henderson scoring 2 penalties and ‘l7th/let' a very good pushover try towards the end, the Regiment ran out winners 10—4 and we had won the BAOR RAC trophy for the first time We, the players, would like to thank the Regiment for their support and help, and we would like to thank those who turned up for training even though the choice of being selected was limited The squad. for posterity, are named below: Maj or Lindsay Lt Pooley Lt Diamond Lt Tyszkiewicz Lt Bennett 2Lt Carr W02 Harries Sgt Foster Sgt Marchant Cpl Crofts Cpl woods Cfn Whittaker Cpl Bilyard Cpl Cherry Cpl Yorke Cpl Ducker LCpl Milson LCpl Pegg LCpl Brignull LCpl Henderson Tpr Henderson Tpr Thomas Tpr Bradley |
