Regiment 9th/12th Lancers
Year 1987
Transcription THE 9TH/lZTH ROYAL LANCERS REGIMENTAL JOURNAL
In spite of this turbulence in the
command structure, the Squadron
continued to work hard on a busy
schedule. Support Troop was reformed
in late 1986 under Sgt Simpkin. The
Squadron exercised at the ILLRP, took
a Belgian Squadron and a German
Company under command for Ex
Grand Canyon and took part in Ex
Eternal Triangle. After Christmas
work was concentrated on preparing
the vehicles and barracks for the hand-
over to the QDG, In April the Squadron
arrived in Wimbish and. after three
weeks block leave. embarked on a
very busy schedule of operations,
exercises, demonstrations and school
fetes. Troop training took place on
Salisbury Plain in June, during which
many vehicle commanders made the
most of the area‘s unique map reading
opportunities. No doubt maps of the
Plain will soon become superfluous
as we become frequent visitors to the
area. In the first phase of this year’s
Troop Tests, the Squadron perfomance
was extremely creditable with Cpl
Bailey’s 2 Tp winning the vehicle/patrol
stand, and the other troop featuring
in the topsix.
in the world of sport we won the
inter-squadron football, beating A Sqn
5—3 in the Final, despite Cpl Bailey
being stretchered off — the pitch was
somewhat quieter for the rest of the
match. We came second in the regir
mental athletics and were well rep
resented in the cross country, The Sqn
"B" team reached the quarter final
of the volleyball competition and we
narrowly lost to HQ Sqn in the semi
final of the cricket. After winning the
rugby last year, it was decided to give
other Squadrons a chance, so we
decided not to take part this year,
but watch this space next season.
Cpl Woods is the squadron sportsman
of the year for sheer participation,
while Tpr Young shared the distinction
for sheer achievement in cross country
running. Cpl Bailey was consistantly
bottom of the squash ladder and
Major Hopkinson top, Well done to
26
Captain Martin, Lt Pooley. Cpls
Bailey, Franklin, and Woods, LCpls
Cunningham. Milson, Pick and Trolley,
and Tprs Allen, Ducker, Howard,
Keeney, Johnston, Wragg and Young
for their sterling efforts in representing
the Regiment on the sports field.
Other characters have come and
gone during the yearl 2Lt Ashwell
spent 6 months learning about things
earthbound before taking to the air
with the AAC. 2Lts Fairfax and Meynell
arrived from Sandhurst. Sgt Kerridge,
after taking part in the Kashmir
expedition last Summer, left for Lul-
worth and marriage (in that order?). Sgt
Duff (Sgt Bluff to his friends) went to
the CTT at Northampton, after a long
period of courses and leave prior to
leaving Wolfenbtittel. Sgt Marshall
left the Regiment for civilian life, and
we wish Maureen and him every success.
We said goodbye to SSgt Day and
all his troop who went to B Sqn on
reorganization of the Squadrons in
Wimbish, we shall miss Tpr O’Connor
for just being different. In return we
welcomed Lt Tyszkiewicz and his troop,
they have now become 4 Tp. Cpl
Kovaes left for Bovington, and LCpl
Leonard moved to the Officers‘ Mess.
Cpl Franklin went to become the
Regimental Post NCO which is a loss
to our hockey team. Cpl McGann
disappeared into RHQ — a loss to our
rugby team. Finally, we lent Lt Char»
rington, Cpl Jones, LCpl Cunningham
and LCpl Morris to the 'suntan squad-
ron’ for their UN tour in Cyprus.
And now a brief tour around the
troops:
lsl Troop
l Tp have seen a lot of manning
changes throughout the year, but despite
these got on with the job. Sgt Hartwell
replaced Sgt Simpkin who took Cpl
Yorke and LCpl Pick with him to the
reformed support troop. Tpr Feltham
went to E Sqn with the GW Tp, and
Tpr Griee moved to 3 Tp. LCpl Lenihan
and Tprs Pagett and Joynson joined
the troop in time {or the Autumn FTX.
The troop had a very good exercise
and fortunately the Sqn Ldr didn't
catch us in the pub this time, as he had
on troop training (well it was a vehicle
commanders’ debrief session!)
