56 REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE 9TH/12TH ROYAL LANCERS (PRINCE OF WALES’S) On to the Operation STILETTO LANCE 3 and with orders given, both Troops set off on a CTR deep into enemy territory to recapture the lost documents; without compromise both were successful and extracted to a local barn where they were once again safe and allowed to rest. Not sure how they managed to get the local pizza man through enemy lines but they did. Reveille by a lone piper came as a surprise, thanks to the Training Officer of 4 SCOTS and — added to the silver service breakfast organised by the RSM — things were looking rosy. However having been on ops and with 12 hours remaining, the importance of de-compression came to a head and to ensure none of the Troopers went back angry and disturbed, paint- balling to rid the soldiers of aggression was organised. This turned fighting soldiers into pussy cats but the memories of Mons Troop standing over a figure 11 target, shooting rapidly hi, ,» 7:19-- t Uri" h“ #§;§t Get in Step. into the helpless cardboard and the aggression shown by Moy Troop realising that 39088828 Tpr S Brooksbank was a Mons Trooper in their camp, makes me question the delicate issue mentioned earlier. Prizes and Sunday lunch in camp and it was over, the LDE was disbanded as quickly as it was formed. Something tells me there will be a rescue op involving house clearances and dignitaries and a possible JNCO Cadre with pro- motions in 2008. Would I call up the LDE? You I bet I would. DPD i Tpr Kate Robinson. ’OCT-ing’ at the Great JMRC o enhance our ‘special relationship’ with the USA Lt Ed Stiles, Sgt Jamie Worgan, Cpls Trevor Garley, Chris Parker and Craig Hopkins had the pleasure of helping 7 Brigade assist the American Army with part of their pre-deployment training for Iraq. The role we were to fulfil for 5 weeks at the end of the year was Observer/ Controller/ Trainers based at the Joint Multinational Readiness Centre at Hohenfels in (snowy) Bavaria. The 10 hour journey down as part of a convoy of 14 Landrovers was entertaining in its own right — Cpl Garley decided he knew best and forged ahead on his own route. We met up with our The Cavalry and Guards Club 127 Piccadilly London W1] 7PX ‘5: ()VI'II) 'mf V3 . 4‘ s‘flf ‘ a 555 $2?ka ,‘ a, 44”; fl " tr \ \V The Cavaliy and Guards Club has one of the finest Edwardian Buildings in London with stunning views of Green Park that is ideal for: Weddings ' Receptions ' Dinner Parties Business Meetings ' Lunches For further details and information please contact our Banqueting Co-ordinator on: Telephone: 020 7659 0905 Fax: 020 7495 5956 www.cavgds.co.uk American counterparts who we would be assisting and enjoyed a week of lectures about exactly what our job would entail. Emerging from those none-the-wiser but fully qualified O/C/Ts, we attached our call sign boards onto the sides of our Landrovers and headed off into The Box (training area to you). The quality of the Troops and tasks we each had to supervise varied but on the whole our contributions to their after action debriefs were appreciated. Despite our initial jealousy of the ‘Hummers’ that our colleagues got to drive, our tune soon changed when the snow came down and their limited heating capacity was exposed. All of us, that is, apart from Cpl ‘Grizzley 12’ Garley who had to resort to huddling up to his gas stove in a bid to avoid hypothermia. Working with the Americans was definitely a very interesting experience and this was a useful opportunity to get to know their system and language before potentially serving alongside them later in 2008. While it is easy to criticise the Americans they are a very friendly Army (Private soldiers eat alongside Colonels in the ‘Chow-Hall’ and happily engage them in conversation) how- ever this should never be mistaken for a lack of formality (they would never dream of referring to their peers by their first names). It would be inappropriate to finish the article without mention- ing Lt ‘Grizzley 12 Fox’ Stiles being towed to safety by Cpl Garley or Cpl ‘Grizzley 20 Alpha’ Hopkins being chased out of The Box by a boar (it sounded huge).
