Year 2002
Transcription 26 REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE 9TH/12TH ROYAL LANCERS (PRINCE OF WALES’S)
Quartermaster Department
It scarcely seems that a year has alreadypassed and we are once
again preparing notes for the Regimental Journal. The year
literally started off with a bang as the department supported the
Regimental Firing Camp. Cpl ‘Packo’ Packwood worked tire-
lessly to ensure that all ammunition was produced on time, to
the required quantity and delivered at the right place. The
RQMS would normallyperform this task however, unfortunate-
ly he was absent through illness, but it has to be said that ‘Packo’
not only performed this task magnificently, but without com-
plaint or a hitch.
The main effort for the department this year was to provide sup-
port to the Regiment as part of the OPFOR Base Admin Group
in BATUS, which saw 50% ofthe ‘green’ members of the depart-
ment being permanently away throughout the nine months.
The remainder of the department formed part of the rear party
and under the guidance of Sgt’s ‘Charlie’ Brown and ‘Gus’
Fletcher, the camp was weeded out, tidied up, given new carpets
and a lick of paint, which resulted in the Commander publicly
commenting favourably on the standard of Haig Bks.
The return from BATUS has seen Cpl ‘Rusty’ Phillips reunited
with ‘Packo’ to form part of the ‘cheeky twins’ and Cpl ‘Tel’
Terry and LCpl ‘Phil’ Cooling reunited with their respective
accounts in preparation for a LSI advisory visit, which proved
to be most successful. The main effort now is preparation for a
regimental exercise in the Czech Republic in March 2003, where
B Echelon will deploy complete, for the first time in many years.
The department now lines up as follows:

Our civilian staff continues to give us excellent support, from
‘Angie’ carrying out extra work as Regimental ‘interpreter’, to
the hard working domestics, who go about their business in a
most competent and cheerful manner, to the tailoresses who
have been particularly busy since the introduction of the
Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal and last but not least the garden-
ers who, no matter how bad the conditions, always manage to
brave the weather and make the gardens look nice. I would like
to take this opportunity to thank them on behalf of the
Regiment, for their outstanding work throughout the year.
Changes ofpersonalities to the department has seen the farewell
of Capt John Pearce, who is posted to Bovington to do a grown
up job and W02 Eddie Dent who is leaving the army after 22
years of loyal and dedicated service, also Tpr Wilson who is
retiring to Colchester. ! We wish John and Maggie, Eddie
and Tina and their famrlres the very best of luck and good for-
tune in the future. We welcome back into the fold from his
cushyposting Capt Fred Reid and his wife Maggie also new into
the department is W02 Mark Gorman and his wife Tracy and
congratulations go to him on his well earned promotion and the
rumours are that he and the QM will form a ‘good guy’ ‘bad guy’
partnership, the question is, who will be who? Watch this space!
Quartermaster Technical
Department
he year ends the same wayas it began: - With not much hap-
pening. No change there then.
With Canada more or less kicking off the year the dept almost
halved in strength, with the departure of RQMS (T) Neil Pegg,
Cpl Loz Lawrence, Cpl Prinna Prince, Cpl Rob Hill and LCpl
Fragle Fackrell. This fine body of men formed part of the
Activation Party and help put in the foundations of a very suc-
cessful tour for the dept.
In May newly promoted SSgt Ramsden once again took up his
favourite hobby and flew out to replace W02 (RQMS (T)) Pegg,
rumour has it by the time he had stopped shaking and sweating
it was time to come back and hand over the reigns to Sgt
Rutherford. Cpl Lawrence returned with SSgt Ramsden in
order to prepare for his D&M Instructors course in the more
solemn surroundings of Bovington.
Despite the dept changing constantly during the nine-month
period of BATUS a high standard of work was maintained. In
QM Staff /ooK/ng forward to 2003
