Queen Mother Remembered
My memory of the Queen Mum as she was affectionately
known in my old regiment 9th/12th Royal Lancers
(Prince of Wales’s) was in 1965 whilst I was stationed in
Germany. As Colonel in Chief, Her Majesty came to visit Her
Regiment on its 250th anniversary.
At the time, I was a lowly trooper working with the regiment’s
polo ponies. We were told we could have a day off as Her
Majesty would not want to see the ponies. Wrong. We received
a telephone call from our officer, Captain Cochrane-Dyet telling
us to “Get the ponies up here on the double as the Queen Mum
wants to see them”. As we were 5 kms from the barracks, panic
set in but we managed to get the ponies lined up for the Royal
Inspection. In the confusion I took hold of two Argentinean
polo ponies which had only arrived two days earlier.
I was introduced to Her Majesty and after asking where I came
from and how long I had been in the regiment she asked me the
names of the ponies. I told her the name of the first pony
‘Vidlida’ but could not remember the name of the second one.
This was the classic case ofme wanting the earth to open up and
swallow me up. The CO, Lieutenant Colonel ]M Brockbank
MC said “It’s Sierra isn’t it Smith!”. I said “Yes Colonel, Sierra”
and stood there red faced and very embarrassed.
The royal party moved on and after they had moved on about
15ft, the Queen Mum stopped, came back and whispered in my
ear. Afterwards a lot of people wanted to know what she had
said as they had never seen me smile so broadly before! Her
Majesty’s actual words were “Never mind Trooper Smith these
Argentinean names are a bugger to remember”. This story was
published in a special 80th birthday book produced by the
London Evening News and I received a beautiful book about
the Queen Mum with an accompanying letter from the editor
saying Her Majesty remembered the incident very well.
A lovely memory of a lovely lady.
When the CO asked me what Her Majesty had said, I did pull
the CO’s leg by telling him that Her Majesty had mentioned
promotion!
Edward ] Smith
