36 REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE 9TH/12TH ROYAL LANCERS (PRINCE OF WALES’S) organised for them and an entertainer for the kids, which they all enjoyed. Thanks to the Chef’s who laid on the food and to the entertainer for his vast knowledge ofblow up animals. April brought about a very sad occasion for the Regiment, the death of our Colonel in Chief, her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. One person from each rank was selected to attend the funeral 7 Cpl Broadhurst was tasked with the hon- orary job of representing our Mess and what a fine job he did too. He made numerous live radio interviews and even appeared on the news around the country. Watch out Emmerdale Farmll Due to the Mess being closed for about eight months it makes it difficult to fill in the gaps but cracking on, November saw the return of the Regiment, the biggest problem being the accumu- lation of Prairie burger fat around people’s waists. It was now getting close to the grand finale 7 Christmas party time and a committee needed to be found to organise it. HQ Sqn finally got the job 7 step forward Cpl’s Swift and Derbyshire. It was decided that some of the draw wouldbe held at the last mess meeting of the year which was 6th December, leaving a small draw on the night so as not to stop people drink- ing for too long. Also we must remember not to sell Cpl Saul any raffle tickets or enter him in the draw next year because if somebody’s going to win anything it’s him. Not happy with winning the TV/DVD surround sound, he only went and won a big cash prize as well. The night of the Christmas do arrived and the drinks were free, which suited Cpl’s Blunt and Jones. LCpl Hobson certainly enjoyed the evening, he was only asked to leave the mess three times due to his ridiculous dancing while under the influence. Cpl “Lucky” Havers, while dancing man- aged to fall over and bang her head, she had to be taken to hos- pital, but whilst on the way the welfare driver managed to smash the car up which gave “Lucky” even more injuries. That’s a Christmas function she’ll never forget!! Padre’s Message want to dispel any rumours, from the very start, that I was in any way lost in Canada. Any suggestion to the contrary is totally incorrect. Corporal Brooksbank assured me we had not left the Prarie for one moment...as he tried to dig out our Land Rover from axle deep soft mud...we were still within the boundary of BATUS...he said. I did have to reassure him that I was not going off on another walkabout, or abandoning him, as I walked off toward a distant hill. Gingerly stepping over discharged (hopefully) ordnance I eventually made my way to the top of the hill. I looked through my binoculars for some sign of life, and scanned the horizon. 360 degrees of emptiness did not fill me with confidence that we had any idea where we were. Still it was another one of those moments for a clergyman to reflect on the important things in life as I pondered our predicament. The similarities between Oman and BATUS were striking, except the weather. Whilst I was there, on one day it was -4 degrees with heavy horizontal snow, the next it rose to +20 degrees and bright sunshine. Nevertheless the 9th/12th sur- passed themselves yet again from this incredibly long and tir- ing training episode in Canada. I was pleased to be able to share with them, albeit for a very short time, and see some of the difficult environments in which they I would like to pass on my thanks to the Sgts’ Mess for letting us use their establishment and the Master Chef and his team for supplying a superb array of foods. Also a good turnout by the mess and the RSM who was Guest of Honour. Last but not least I would like to thank the mess committees and members who have put in the hard work throughout the year. This sets a good standard for the younger mess members to achieve in the future. Lets now look forward to another fun packed year in the mess. Cp/ Broadhulst 7 Queen Mother’s funera/ ”Emu The en//ghtened Padre M///s have to work. As we approach 2003 the world stage is continuing to change at an ever-increasing pace, and few know for sure what lies around the next corner. I hope you will share with me and pray for these men and women, their families and their friends, as they continue to ful- fil the difficult tasks they have to face. May God bless them all. |
