Hockey
s expected the Regiments’ commitment to BATUS as
OPFOR has limited the amount of hockey that has been
played this season. The main competition that we played was
the 7 Armd Bde 7-a-side hockey tournament in Oct 02. Details
are as follows:
7 ARMD BDE 7-a-Side Hockey Tournament
29 Oct 02
This tournament took place in Hohne on 29 Oct 02 with the
teams being split into 2 leagues. We were drawn in the
strongest league and were first on against 3 RHA. After an
excellent goal from LCpl Minto, were delighted to come away
with a 1:0 win 7 a good start.
We then faced 7 ABSS and again came away with a 2:0 win.
Our next match was against 1 RRF, the main competitors in our
league. Tactics were required here, as a draw would secure us a
place in the semi-finals and would save legs which were starting
to tire. We put in a good display and consolidated our hockey
and came away with a comfortable draw.
Sadly our relaxed form stayed with us in our next match against
32 Engr Regt and we again came away with a draw 7 not a good
result against a team where we should have had a very comfort-
able win.
We had qualified for the semis but as l RRF had a better goal
difference, we were placed against the winners of League B 7
Scots DG.
In a match that many saw as the final, both teams put in a spir-
ited performance, desperately seeking the early lead. We
absorbed their pressure and replied with waves of attacks but
could not find the net. With a draw at full time, a golden goal
in extra time beckoned. After some strong work in the midfield
we were rewarded with a short corner. In a display of brilliance,
Capt Pope (RMO) completely flummoxed the defence with a
superb spin on the ball and Cpl Swift put the ball into the net.
The final saw us once again against the RRF and an excellent
display of hockey ensued. We attacked and attacked but, with
some good defensive work by the RRF, could not find the net.
A break away attack by the RRF late in the second half saw a
one on one against the keeper. Despite a valiant attempt, at full
stretch, the RRF centre forward managed to keep the ball and
slotted the ball home from a very acute angle 7 a superb goal.
Time was sadly against us now and the whistle was blown
before we could reply.
This was an excellent and committed performance and we per-
formed extremely well as it was our first match together for the
season.
The future:
We have a good deal of talent within the Regiment and must
now consolidate, train and drive forward. The Army Cup and
the defence of the BA(G) 6-a-side trophy beckon 7 as ever we
relish the challenges.

OBITUARY
Tpr Buxton
Tpr David Buxton completed his Phase II Training at Bovington and arrived in Germany to join the Regiment on
27 August 2002. During his training, he brought a fresh outlook to soldiering, remaining cheerful during all
aspects of his courses. Even when challenged by long working days and having to attend revision during the
evenings he still had the reserve to remain positive and focused on what was required of him.
His mild manner and easy going style meant he was quickly welcomed into the Regiment. This, combined with
the confidence to talk to people across the rank structure with ease indicated a potential to progress quickly.
Indeed, in his short time with the Regiment, his friendliness and sense of comradeship suggested he had settled in
well and was beginning to revel in his role in the 9/l2L family.
Tragically, he died in an RTA on the Hohne Range road on 7 September 2002. His memorial service was held on
26 September in Chesterfield with strong representation by the Regiment, including lance markers and pall bear-
ers. All his Regimental friends extend their deepest sympathy to David’s family at their very sad loss.
