Year 2002
Transcription 32 REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE 9TH/12TH ROYAL LANCERS (PRINCE OF WALES’S)
of time during the year, he believed, that RGSS stood for Really
Good Skiing Sgt and in truth for him it did.
The two Int Cell Cpls both managed to escape from their warm
office into the wide world on promotion. Sgt Wick went to the
cold depths of ‘B’ Sqn Tank Park and Sgt Pegg moved into the
Welfare Office, to support the newly promoted Capt Denton.
To replace them in the Wing, along came Cpl Johnson who
escaped from the SQMS Department and LCpl Brassington who
escaped from the clutches of ‘C’ Sqn and Tpr Russell who man-
aged his escape from Command Tp, only to rejoin them for a
while in BATUS.
Finally, a goodbye went to the man of many medals (Capt Crofts)
and a hello to the new IO, the jungle trained, ceremonially expe-
rienced, Capt Lort-Phillips. He leads the Training Wing into
2003, as we attempt to fill the unforgiving minute with sixty sec-
onds worth of distance run. So if you can keep your head when
all around you are losing theirs, come and book in your ITD
training before the wing is inundated with calls to use the facili-
ties. Our doors are always open!
Gym Staff
Well another year gone by and quite a bit has happened once
again.
2001 finished with the inter company X-country on a very wet
and windy day, which meant quite a few pairs of training shoes
spent their Christmas out on the training area.
Once christmas had passed it was then on with planning for
Canada since we had been tasked with doing the OPFOR for
2002 summer season. I managed to get a quick recce in February
just for 48 hours but it was enough to get the feel of what lay
ahead.
Well April came and it was time to go our separate ways LCpl
Rocky Hudson was off to Bovington and I was on my way to
Canada for 7 months. During the units time in Canada 3RHA
had kindly offered to run our Gymnasium in our absence.
On arriving in Canada my job was to be the OPFOR representa-
tive up at Trails End Camp, looking after the Adventure Training
and also co-ordinating an adventure training exercise, Exercise
Bear Dawn (Multi Activity Exercise) for the whole season.
Our first package was to be a skiing package this involved two
five day ski packages, which were run up at Lake Louise. On
completion of the 2 courses the unit ended up with 39 Basic Ski
Proficiency (BSP), 5 Advance Ski Proficiency (ASP) and 1
Canadian Level 1 Ski Instructor. The whole adventure training
package was a great success the activities varied from snow
boarding to parachuting and from paragliding to alpine moun-
taineering.
I would just like to thank all the personnel that came up on the
admin teams and supported me for the duration of all the pack-
ages, without there help it would have made my life a lot more
difficult
Well this year is not quite over and there is still a lot to do,
we still have the Inter Sqn boxing and the Inter Sqn X-
Country. I must finish here as there’s a busy two days until
we start our boxing.
SQMS Department
It has been yet again another busy period for HQ Sqn SQMS
over the past year, with a few personality changes to boot. We
started off the year preparing for deployment to BATUS as part
of OPFOR, with the Regiment employed as part of the Base
Admin Group.
On arrival in BATUS we took over the excellent OPFOR soldier
living accommodation, the vehicle hangar and an extremely BIG
armoury. At the end of April SQMS 1/02 now W02 Keeney
returned prematurely back to Germany to take over as A Sqn SSM,
which left Cpl Simpson running the accounts held by SQMS
BAG.
Back in Germany the new SQMS 2/02 SSgt Dave Clark was busy
taking over the account and preparing for his unexpected tour of
BATUS. The next 2 months in BATUS passed quickly!! At the
end of June SQMS 2/02 ably assisted by Cpl “Johnno” Johnson
arrived in BATUS to take over the reins as the BAG SQMS.
After some well-earned leave Cpl Simpson returned to work to
find a new addition to the dept, Tpr “FRUIT” (P) Astill, joining
the dept temporarily until the BATUS tour had finished.
July & August came & went. At the end ofSeptember SQMS 2/02
returned to Germany and was posted to ‘B’ Squadron as their
SQMS. SQMSless once again, we wondered if it was something
we had said??? In October saw Sgt Chris Hatton postedback to the
Regiment and take over as SQMS 3/02.
Then in November the dept had another change around with Cpl
Simpson and Cpl Johnson posted out of the dept. Posted in was
Cpl Shaun Debell.
Thanks to everyone for their help over the last year. For all those
leaving or left the Department we wish you all the best and thank
you for your hard work over the year, and for all those arriving into
the Department best of luck, you will need it!
The Provost Troop
The Saga Continues . . .
he emphasis for this years journal notes was BATUS, but
unfortunately for some unlucky individuals i.e. the Provost
Sgt and his faithfiJl sidekick LCpl Whittaker, we had to stay
behind and ensure the smooth running of the Regiment and the
Station Guardroom till those “Cheers easy’s” in BATUS returned
in November.
After one and a half months of the Regiment being away we
wished we had gone out there! What with the added responsibili-
ties of the B.FG. Office and looking after LCpl Whitworth, we
were down to minus figures in manpower from the start!
So what’s been happening with Provost Troop this year?
Sgt Brignull aged even more trying to sort out SNCO duties and
allocating which Squadrons remaining in Hohne did what duties.
LCpl Whittaker took over the responsibilities of the B.FG. NCO
from SSgt Holmes and was briefly helped by LCpl Whitworth till
his departure to BATUS, that was until Cpl Brooksbank returned
from Canada when he then took over these onerous duties and
remained there until his well earned promotion to Sgt and subse-
quent transfer to ‘B’ Squadron. Cpl Whitworth returned to BA(G)
on promotion and was transferred to ‘C’ Squadron. The only per-
sonnel posted in to the troop was the infamous Cpl Fleetwood
