Judo
With 2004 being as successful as it was, 2005 got off to a very
promising start. With a trip to Bath University, some valuable
skills and training were achieved, although it took quite some
time to calm ‘JJ’ down when he found out that there would be
members of the opposite seX there! Bath University is an
absolutely fantastic place to train; Mike Callan, 6th Dan and
Director of]udo at Team Bath couldn’t have been more helpful.
Roy Inman, author of ‘The Judo Handbook’, Joyce Malley, 8
times World Master Champion and Kate Howey, Olympic
Medallist also all belong to this excellent club.
The training and coaching that we received at Team Bath paid
off; we received 4 gold, 2 silver and 12 bronze medals in both the
novice and intermediate categories. However, most important-
ly, we put a stop to 12 Regt Royal Artillery’s two year reign by
taking the Falklands Trophy as winners of the novice team
event, actually won by the Regimental B Team, who beat the A
Team in the semi finals. Sgt Pumford presented Mike Callan,
Director of Judo at Bath University, with an engraved
Regimental plaque as a small token of our appreciation for their
hospitality.
The Medal winners, Teams and Individuals who competed at
the Championships were as follows:
Novice Females:
Pte Nayakabau (Silver Medal)
Novice Males:
L/Cpl Harding (Bronze Medal)
Tpr Peters (Bronze Medal)
Tpr Mukunungwa (Silver Medal)
Tpr O’Kelly (Bronze Medal)
Tpr Gilbert (Gold and Bronze Medal)
Tpr Curran (Bronze Medal)
Tpr Day (injured)
Tpr Whitcher (Heats)
Intermediate Females:
Cpl Dawn Brown (Bronze Medal)
Intermediate Males:
Sgt Andy Pumford (Bronze Medal)
L/Cpl Lee Salih (Bronze Medal)
L/Cpl Craig Hopkins (Bronze Medal)
Tpr ‘Smokey’ Bacon (Gold Medal)
Tpr Butler (injured)
Team Mons: (Bronze Medal winners)
Tpr Ben Peters
Tpr Roy Mukunungwa (Shizzle)
Tpr ‘Paddy’ O’Kelly
Team Moy: (Falklands Trophy winners)
WOl (RSM) Steve Buckley
Cfn J] Williamson
(Tpr Tom Day had to pull out through injury in the second heat)
Tpr ‘Gilly’ Gilbert
One of the most memorable things on the day was watching Tpr
Peters slowly drift into an unconscious state while being strangled
because he was too stubborn! Whilst funny at the time it actually
ruined his competition as he was rather groggy all day, however
he soldiered on and finished with a Bronze Medal. WOl (RSM)
Buckley experienced the same treatment from the same competi-
tor later on and tapped out, (submitted) before going on to win a
Gold Medal in the team event 7 brains are needed as much as
brawn Tpr Peters! Cpl Dawn Brown also suffered a black eye, but
we are not entirely sure where this came from!
Unfortunately the Regiment was on OPTAG training at the
same time as the BAG championships so we were unable to
Judo Champ/OHS,
