June saw the squadron on Annual Live Firing and SHQ troop
was there to supply the all important communications although
Cpl Cassidy was whisked away to do some ‘gobbly-wobbly’
training. All returned after the end of a successful gunnery
camp ready for the trials of the All Ranks Briefing and the In
Barracks Training. It was also the time that we said some fond
farewells to both the Sqn Ldr and the SSM. Maj Dom Goggs
and his family who have gone to join the 9/l2L mafia down in
Bovington 7 we wish them all the best. Maj Bill Fooks arrived
at a very exciting time, and his enthusiasm has infected us all.
WO2 Welborn, who left for a comfier office as the RQMS(T),
has been replaced by WO2 ‘The Baron von’ Hatton, who has
come from Tayforth OTC where he had been keeping his eye on
the St Andrews students, very closely.
OPTAG live firing ranges were an excellent opportunity for
those who had little experience of Field Firing to really turn
into a troop of Rambos with pairs, fire and manoeuvre through
the woods as well as some top-cover shoots. The experience was
enjoyed thoroughly by all. The OPTAG Confirmatory Exercise
was seen by many as the highlight of the pre-tour preparations
and saw the troop fairly dispersed among the multiples but with
some of the hard nosed signaller manning, and in some cases
building, the various Ops Rooms. LCpl ‘Bob’ De Mon found
herself with the enviable job of a female searcher, and was occa-
sionally forced to step away from the computer This happened
sometimes for hours at a time and she returned a positively
shell-shocked look on her faced.. It was the culmination of
some hard training and once again enjoyed by all.
The squadron deployed on Op TELIC 7 in October and the
troop was split with half coming out with the advance party to
do all the handover business, and the ‘short tourers’ arriving a
few days later in the main body. Now that we are here in Iraq,
there do not seem to be enough hours in the day for all we have
to achieve; particularly for the OC’s rover group who seem to do
a lot more work than the rest of us, so stag on, boys! We must
also not forget to mention Sgt Coburn’s
cohorts who beaver away in the G2 cell, to
dream up with some interesting intelli-
gence as well as keeping Tpr Pincott
out of trouble. The troop wishes to“;
