Year 2005
Transcription REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE 9TH/12TH ROYAL LANCERS (PRINCE OF WALES’S) 67
match against them. The game was not affected by the heavy
rain, and the two teams were very much of the same standard,
with the Regiment eventually winning. The match was notable
for 2Lt Knight going from llth man to tea boy; sadly a crick-
eter appeared to take his place! Lt Short giving out Capt Barnett
LBW as he wanted to bat, Lt Short did not bat! The Regiment
also took charge of the garrison cricket team; although sadly at
the last minute several players had to pull out. We did send sev-
eral of the young, up and coming cricketers, Tprs Green, Keane
and Neale all represented the Regt at the Inter-Garrisons.
The team is now looking forward to a cricket tour of Sri Lanka
in Sept 06.

Cross Country
he 9/12L Cross Country team has had a mixed bag of per-
formances over the year, with a few stalwarts making jour-
neys across BA(G) to race over a variety of different courses. As
always the congestion of Wednesday afternoon sports saw some
runners lost to other sports. The first race of the season took
place in Gutersloh over a flat lOkm course , hosted by lAAC.
This saw promising performances from Tpr Wood (B Sqn) and
Lt Bottomley and a good all round team performance from LCpl
Stephens, LCpl Marland, LCpl Hallas, LCpl Redford and Tpr
Storer amongst others. It was encouraging too to see the begin-
nings of a women’s team forming with Cpl Verrier and Pte
Nyakabau competing, the latter producing a top 20 finish.
Other commitments meant the Regt were not able to make every
league race of the season although Cpl Potter and Tpr Gilbert
joined the team for a journey to Osnabruck. This proved to be
one of the hardest races of the season with a 10km course rout-
ed over two significant climbs, including an extended 2km
uphill stretch from the start and a steep lkm climb towards the
finish. Unfortunately for Tpr Wood his energy sticks did not
quite have the effect for which he was looking!
Good performances followed in the Comd’s Trophy event held
in Hohne and the team continued to put up a spirited effort in
the 1 (UK) Armd Div league, finishing a respectable mid-table
for a relatively small team. Plans are afoot for a more dedicated
push under Lt Tripuraneni in 2006 with the increased time
available which should see 9/12L Cross Country competing with
the stronger teams in our league. This will include the contin-
ued development of the women’s team for all those that are
interested.
Basketball
asketball within the Regiment has progressed from the inter
Sqn games held and written about in the last journal. The
significant improvement has seen entry into the BA(G) Major
Unit Championships for the first time since the days of Herford
for the men and uniquely for the first time ever for a female
team. Over two days of competition both the female and male
team played a number of games in a league system. The male
team had a mixture of experienced (in age only) players teaming
up with novices with real ability. SSgt Galley joined WOZ
Welborn to play in every game over both days. This was not due
to expertise but due to some of the younger players being a lit-
tle flamboyant and committing a few too many fouls. They were
joined by SSgt Styles who managed to creak on for at least half
of every game and advise the referee on some of the more com-
plex decisions made. Unfortunately the team was knocked out
and never moved any further towards the playoffs which fin-
ished the second days competing. This was the same for the
ladies who were unlucky to move into the playoffs when they
narrowlybecame another victim to the eventual winners in their
last game.
With Op TELIC unfortunately having an impact of Regimental
sports it is hoped that the inter Sqn Basketball can generate
enough interest to lead the Regimental team onto a more
dynamic performance in the next BA(G)
Competition ...... Watch this space.
Peto Cup
his year was a special evening in the history of the
Regimental Peto Cup in that all wives and girl friends were
allowed to attend for the first time, breaking down an age old
barrier and perhaps adding to the pressure to perform for the
boxers!
As ever the Round-House provided the ideal location, and an
excellent atmosphere. With HQ Sqn the firm favourites, the
audience experienced guts, real courage, and a great amateur
attitude to see things through to the end and do there best pos-
sible for their squadrons.
In the end HQ Sqn suffered a surprise defeat at the hands ofA
Sqn, the underdogs with only had half the manpower of the
other sabre Sqns and less than a third of HQ Sqn’s strength!
As ever, a huge well done to everyone who trained and boxed,
and also to all those involved in organising such a good evening.
A special well done to A Sqn and particularly Tpr Jackson (A
Sqn) who had an excellent fight against Pte Bispart (HQ Sqn).
The final results were: lst place A Sqn, 2nd place HQ Sqn, 3rd
place B Sqn and 4th place C Ssqn.
