86 REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE 9TH/12TH ROYAL LANCERS (PRINCE OF WALES’S) Thus after seven months of almost incessant fighting during which they had gallantly served no less than seven formations they took ship from Trieste for filrther combat in The Far East. General Freyburg Commanding 2nd New Zealand Division, their Band and much of the Division were on the docks to bid farewell to ‘Their Gurkhas’ Churchill made special mention of them; Field Marshal The Lord Alexander of Tunis designated them ‘Second to none’. That was the reputation they took away with them; these gallant, carefree, hill men. They left behind far too many who lie now in the beautifully tended British War Grave Commission cemetaries in Italy, the land they died to free. As a result of their close comradeship in battle both 6th Queen Elizabeth’ s Own Gurkhas and 14/20th Hussars respectively wore the double headed Prussian Eagle and crossed kukris on their sleeves for the neXt forty years and the association is still commemorated by their successor regiments. Their unique formation association may have finally come to an end but the memory of their deeds deserves to live on in the memories of the old and the imagination of the young. Christopher Bullock One Day’s Pay Scheme 1. What is the One Day’s Pay Scheme? The Day’s Pay Scheme was introduced in 1965. It provides an Anny- wide procedure for the collection of subscriptions for the Regimental Charity (The Charitable Association) from serving officers and soldiers. The 9th/l2th Royal Lancers Charitable Association is a regis- tered Charity and is governed by Trustees made up of Serving and Fonner members ofthe Regiment. The annual accounts are published annually in the Regimental Journal and are subject to external audit. 2 What are the aims of the Association? The Association was established to: a. Promote the efficiency of the Regiment and to maintain its history, traditions and spirit de corps. b. Relieve, either generally or individually, persons who are serving or who have served in the Regiment the 9th Lancers, the 12th Lancers or the 27th Lancers, who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress and their depend- ents who are likewise so qualified. 3. Why do Ipay? In 2004 64 individual received a total of £26,067 in grants, and the Regiment received money to install the History Room and run EX Argenta Spring, and £5000 was granted to both the Anny Benevolent Fund and SSAF A. 3. What do I pay? Soldiers are currently invited to pay 100% of one day’s net pay to the Association, while officers pay 200% of which 90% is retained by the Association and the remaining 110% reverts to other Serving Regimental Charities. 4. What is Gift Aid? Where members sign a Gift Aid Fonn, the Association claim back the tax paid by the individual for the benefit of the fund at no cost to the individual. 5. Retired Members. Many former members of the Regiment subscribe, and will con- tinue to subscribe, varying amounts after retirement using Gift Aid. 6. Changes to the Day’s Pay Scheme. The implementation ofa Joint Personnel Administration (JP A) centre in April 2007 for the Army will change the operation of the scheme. AFP AA (Glasgow) currently draw down voluntary regimental subscriptions based on a percentage of one day’s assessable annual pay. This will be deducted each quarter through indi- vidual pay statements across the Army. Gift Aid allows the Association to reclaim tax on these contributions. When JP A replaces the AFP AA system, the present arrange- ments will be impractical. In order for the process to continue, future subscriptions will have to be collected under a Payroll Giving Scheme in 12 monthly instalments. Payroll Giving is a Government backed scheme to assist Charities in England and Wales. This is con- sidered a more effective scheme than Gift Aid in that subscrip- tions are deducted pre-taX and distributed to the Charities on a monthly, as opposed to quarterly basis. It also provides a direct tax benefit to the individual subscribers. 7. Future Action. The JP A is planned to take effect for the Army in April 2007. When the full details are available they will be published and disseminated to all ranks. |
