REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE 9TH/12TH ROYAL LANCERS (PRINCE OF WALES’S) 61 Shooting ince the last Journal the small and select group ofJagers has dwindled filrther, a shame that we are fewer in number but all the more quarry for those remaining. The lst of May Bock Jagd was spectacularly quiet with only Major Dom Goggs bag- ging a couple of young Roebuck. Our hosts, Aki and Heinrich were ever generous laying on a morning and evening shoot, breakfast and an impromptu Clay shoot. The first of the ever elusive Schwartzwild was bagged by the Commanding Officer near Bredebeck. Now suitably stuffed and prone, it graces the piano in the Officer’s Mess, creating much mirth with visiting Germans who invariably comment on its lack of size. Hot on Lt Col Charrington’s heels, Major Tim Jones bagged a brace of Boar on the ranges under the eXpert guidance of Andreas Buhler, the Ober Forstmeister. The Adjutant meanwhile, has spent numerous chilly evenings and mornings waiting for a Boar only to have a ‘rotte’ of them taunt him from directly below his chair out of shot. Deployment to Iraq has not stopped the shooting, Wild boar is widely available due to not being eaten by the locals and a recent Partridge shoot ended up with Major Jones taking an impromp- tu dip in the Shatt Al Arab and a bag of2 brace. With our return to Hohne in May ’06 and some new faces in the Regiment the band of shooters may swell. Hugh Pierson and Clwyd Owen are keen to run further Jagdschien courses to qualify more hunters. Not the preserve of Officers’, this is a sport that is open to all. While no record of a bag in Germany has been kept, it has included; Wild Boar, Red and Roe deer, Fox, Duck and Pheasant. Ma/ Jones W/‘lh Ma/ Moss {QO‘O and a Panr/dge, None of our sport would have been possible without the gen- erosity and hospitality of Andreas Buhler, Clwyd Owen, Aki von Reden and Heinrich Heine and their families. The welcome and opportunities they have given us to shoot with them has been truly humbling, we have all been touchedby this insight to Germany’s hunting and really can not thank them enough. Rowing he year began for the 9/12L Rowing Team with a visit to the BA(G) Indoor Rowing Championships at Munster. This included individual 2km time trials and also a 4km team event, all on the dreaded ergo, the indoor rowing machine’s alternative name. Lt Bottomley, SSgt Styles and Sgt Pumford made the trip, with W02 Welborn unfortunately unable to make it due to last minute commitments. Everyone raced well in the individ- ual events with victory for Sgt Pumford in the 30-35yrs catego- ry and a second for Lt Bottomley in the 20-30yrs category. All three came in below the 7 minute barrier, boding well for the team event. The team event saw the 4km distance broken down into 500m legs with the clock running throughout. The 9/12L team soon put their mark on the race, pushing out into an early lead with SSgt Styles and Sgt Pumford using their power to good effect. Efficient handovers, better techniquea agrea r endurance saw the 9/12L extend their lead significan y o ' second half of the race to win by over 1 minute from the' fimivals. Lt Bottomley went on to represent the Army in the Eights Head, a 7km national time trial event held over the reverse of the Boat Race course. The Army finished 59th out of the 500 crews compet- ing, a significant improvement on the previous year’s result, winning the Services Pennant for good measure. Prizegiving took place in the local Fullers Brewery. Members of the crew including Lt Bottomley reformed 6 months later to compete in the Breda Military International Regatta. Whilst it did not turn out to be quite the international bonanza that the title promised, the British Army crew still defeated the 16 Dutch crews over the 6km course both outright and through a handicap system by over 2 m nutes; . ..
