70 REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE 9TH/12TH ROYAL LANCERS (PRINCE OF WALES’S) Home Headquarters Home Headquarters, 9th/12th Royal Lancers (Prince of Wales’s), TA Centre, Saffron Road, Wigston, LEICESTER LEl8 4UX Regimental Secretary Major DN Chappell Assistant Regimental Secretary Captain SP Hardy Telephone: 0116 278 5425 Fax: 0116 275 9571 Administrative Officer Mr S Mamnani Web Site :www.delhispearman.org.uk Miss A Ilankovan Clerical Support Assistant t hardly seems that a year has passed since our last report. It must mean that we are all having fun! The team is unchanged, and while not claiming to be a well oiled machine, we seem to have kept the majority of people happy- Suresh runs the office with increasing confidence and thor- oughness. He keeps the accounts and books for the Association, OCA and HHQ in exemplary fashion. He has a remarkable memory for names and events, and can produce the associated file or letter with a skill that would be the envy of Paul Daniels. Ajantha has made the Potential Officers her special preserve, and in taking her job seriously went out to Hohne to inspect the current officers in their natural habitat. She was accompanied by the Museum Curator Viv Rudd. Very few details of this visit have been released but they appear keen to repeat it. Whether the Commanding Officer has found an answer to being asked “... sorry who are you?” is not recorded. Ajantha now has a Masters Degree in Information Systems and is heavily involved in up dating both our records and the museum archives. Joe struggles manfully to keep the show on the road, while com- plaining that the Secretary is never in the office. The mobile telephone is a wonderful thing but Joe says that his is not water- proof so he cannot take it fishing. Not a very watertight excuse I say! He does most of the driving when we are out and about, mainly because I have to map read for him, and of course he has a smarter car !So smart that he only goes on A roads or Motorways where there is less chance of getting it muddy. ( He would say that it is to make it easier for the map reader which is of course totally untrue). The secretary made a business visit to Oman when matters of high import were discussed. Unfortunately his memory plays him up and he still cannot remember where Balvennie or Ardbeg fit into the Potential Officer plot. (Nevertheless togeth- er with the Colonel we did interview some 14 candidates in a one week spell last autumn). As the Regiment was unable to host a Mons Moy, we ran a Race Day at Leicester in July. The take up of tickets was not as strong as in the past but we still took two adjacent boxes and had a thoroughly enjoyable day. Derek Priddey Smith presented the Trophy for the 9th/ 12th Royal Lancers Handicap. Derek also volunteered to come to an Education Day at the Museum where he spoke to an audience of schoolchildren about the experience of going to war. He compared his memories to those of the members of the Recruiting Team who had been in the former Yugoslavia and on Op Telic. The children were spell- bound and broke into excited questioning at the end. This was one event sponsored by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) as part of the Anniversary of the End of the Second World War. It was very disappointing to see the poor take up by schools, espe- cially having seen the reaction of the children who did attend, and that all expenses were met by the HLF The HLF funding entitled Home Front Recall also extended to events attended by veterans of the War, such as the Annual OCA Dinner, Race Day and the Christmas Lunch. A party of 5 Veterans went out on Exercise Argenta Spring to Italy, and they were also funded by the Heroes Return Grant. The Bid to the HLF to refurbish the Museum has received Stage One Approval.
