Band of the 9th Queen’s Royal Lancers and Colleagues from
the Regiment Old Comrades Association
he past twelve months have seen our Association go from
strength to strength although I feel that we may have
“peaked” in our recruitment campaign especially now that we
have lost our chief recruiting “sergeant” Pat Morgan. The atten-
dance at our 8th Annual Reunion weekend in York was the
highest ever since the Association was formed but the highlight
for sixteen of us was the trip to Detmold, Germany, the base and
home of the 9th Lancers for nine years until 1960. This pil-
grimage was planned down to the last detail by Pat Morgan but
sadly he died only a week prior to our departure - everything
went according to plan and it was a wonderful nostalgic return
for us who had left Lothian Barracks some forty or fifty years
previously - we walked on what used to be the parade ground
now bisected by shrubbery - the swimming pool has been filled
in but the Gym is in first class condition as are the ones former-
1y used as the Naffi, stables and dining room - these are now
classrooms. The Officers Mess is a place of worship and the
squadron blocks now have balconies and TV dishes in place-a
far cry from the fifties.Lothian Barracks is now home to Asylum
seekers and displaced persons.
In addition to Pat we lost two former bandsmen, Gerry Barker
and Maurice Weighman-somehow we cannot go from one year
to the neXt without losing someone.
The 9th Reunion will be held at the Monkbar Hotel in York on
Friday, Saturday and Sunday the 15th, 16th and 17th of
September this year.
