20 REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE 9TH/12TH ROYAL LANCERS (PRINCE OF WALES’S) 3rd Troop The months following OP TELIC 7 were never going to be as busy or exciting as the tour itself, but an important period none the less for the Troop to recover and to catch up on training. After a month of POTL the Troop, in its current ORBAT, was formed. All members of the Troop underwent BOWMAN training as the Regiment was brought up to speed with the rest of the Army. Sgt Mark Kaminski and Cpl Andy Casey played key roles in instructing the Regiment about this new communications sys- tem before Sgt Kaminski waved goodbye to the Regiment for the next couple of years to move back to Bovington and pass on his knowledge at the Signals School; our loss is the ‘Wing’s’ gain! Cpl ‘Gibbo’ Gibson once again had a busy year, as well as regu- larly running the Troop he organised a fantastic Summer ball for the Corporals’ Mess and took part in plenty of sport. He played well on the difficult Regimental Cricket Tour to Sri Lanka and helped the team towards their three ‘victories’. Unfortunately he decided to hang up his gloves and take on a coaching role for the Peto cup; where he did a fantastic job with the limited num- ber ofrecruits he had at his disposal. Despite the arduous BOW- MAN instructing schedule, Cpl Casey still had time to compete in the Commander’s Cup Strongman competition achieving a very respectable fifth place. Through regular training he is con- vinced he can improve on his performance next time although with the arrival of ZLt Ed Stiles in the Troop he will be up against some pretty serious competition. Tpr Johnny Wilcox was promoted to LCpl, which was thor- oughly deserved, and he was rewarded by being sent straight on the Regimental Recruiting Team; which some claim is appar- ently hard work. LCpl Trev Garley saw the error of his ways and was welcomed back into the Regiment after a short posting in ‘Civvy Street’ and was also rewarded by joining LCpl Wilcox on RRT; trying to persuade girls back in the UK to join the Regiment! Both Tprs Patterson and ‘Roger’ Moore joined the Squadron in training for the Peto Cup. Tpr Moore unfortunately took a ‘lucky’ punch to the nose which ruled him temporarily out of action and Tpr Patterson was ‘robbed’ by the judges in the pre- liminary round. Regardless of the results it was a fantastic achievement to even take part at any level and hopefully they’ll take their experience onto next year’s competition. On a slight- ly different note Tpr Patterson helped build a playhouse at the ‘Little Acorns’ Kindergarten showing that he really is a man for all occasions! September was a time for Adventurous Training with Tprs Shillito, Wright and Moore enjoying the multi-activity training. Tpr Reaney enjoyed the fortnight sailing that was on offer and probably enjoyed his month working in the Officers’ Mess even more! Tpr McCabe decided that a month in the WOs’ and Sgts’ Mess was enough Adventurous Training for him. A special mention ought to be made of Tpr Wright who enjoyed the Troop trip to Berlin so much that he decided to stay an extra day! Along with a number of other courses, Tprs McCabe, Patterson, Reaney, Shillito and Wright successfully completed B3 Gunnery and enjoyed their first experiences of firing on the ranges. The forthcoming busy Training year will be a great opportunity for the Troop to move from strength to strength and for every- one (including ZLt Stiles, who within weeks of arriving back at the Regiment had headed off skiing) to gain some invaluable training to prepare us for the next challenge. EDSS Err...are you sure that we made the right turning? |
