84 REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE 9TH/12TH ROYAL LANCERS (PRINCE OF WALES’S) Regimental Sport Due to our operational tour last year we found it nearly impossible to field any credible sporting teams. Since our return in May 2006 we have been active and able to achieve some notable successes. This has included sending soldiers bobsleighing to Calgary, fielding a twenty man cricket squad for a tour to Sri Lanka and allowing some of our rugby players to tour parts of Southern Australia with the RAC squad. Closer to home, and during the Commander’s Trophy Competition, the Regiment achieved considerable success by coming runners up out of the eight major units competing in this event. Our Cricket team were the overall winners, which proved a useful warm up prior to their tour, and our rowing team, along with the footballers, were placed second within their respective leagues. On the sailing front there have been two expeditions during September and October and we were able to get sixty Officers and Soldiers away to sea with our four yachts. They were able to circumnavigate the main Danish island of Vestjaelland with crew changes taking place in Copenhagen and further sailing was also achieved in the warmer waters along the Spanish coastline. Inter Squadron competitions have continued and the most notable to mention, briefly, so as not to impose on the Boxing Officer’s notes, was this years Peto Cup. The finals were held in the historic Roundhouse in Hohne Garrison and featured box- ing and courage of a very high order. HQ Squadron fielded a very strong team and became victors at the close of the evening which was the first time they had won this event since 1958. During the same week we hosted the BA (G) indoor hockey championships, where, despite the heavy pressures on units in BA (G), eighteen teams made it to Hohne to take part in this event. We were placed a credible fourth and the Commanding Officer presented 4 Regiment Royal Artillery, from Paderborn, with the winning trophy. As these notes are being written, our main effort for this year’s sporting calendar is well underway, with our ski teams estab- lished in their training camps in Norway, Switzerland and Austria. For the first time in many years, thirty five officers’ and soldiers are representing the Regiment in Alpine, Nordic and Snowboarding with our Cresta team departing for the slopes very soon after the Christmas break. Members of the Regiment have continued to be selected for Corps and Army teams in a number of different events, ranging from Rugby (including the Singapore 7s), Cresta in Calgary and Smooth Bore Shooting at Bisley. You will be able to read more about each of these indi- vidual sports as you move through the next few pages of this journal and hopefully agree that this has been a very successful and productive sporting year. 1P Boxing November 2006 saw the revival of the Peto Cup, after its absence from last year due to commitments of Op TELIC 7. The night proved to be a huge success, with an opening bout from a German Sports Club based in Celle, Herr Wolfgang Myer and his team providing a five minute, unarmed combat display, to advertise his club to the Regiment, and offer us a window that enabled the coaches to get their Boxers ready for the first bout. Sponsorship was in great supply this year, most notably; Chaplains Bar (Ring Girl), Boomerang Bar (Lonsdale Red and Yellow Silk Boxing Robes), The Source IT shop (donations towards the Trophies) and finally ISL (provided the much need- ed entertainment and lighting effects). The event started in great style and it will be a hard act to follow in future years. The Boxers were marched out, Lance Markers in ceremonials leading. With the Spectators roar of approval (and the laser lighting show) combined with the 100 decibels of music - the night was on a winner immediately. As the bouts began, it was obvious that the quality of training, received under difficult and busy conditions, was to a high standard. All the Boxers are to be congratulated on the display of skill, courage LCp/ W/‘nfle/d in M flight. |
