Regiment 9th/12th Lancers
Year 2006
Transcription REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE 9TH/12TH ROYAL LANCERS (PRINCE OF WALES'S) 113
Regimental Museum
am very pleased to introduce myself to the Regimental
Journal. My name is Mike Galer and I am the new Keeper of
Military History at Derby Museum and the Curator of the
Regimental Museum Collection. If you did not know, Viv Rudd,
the previous Curator left in June 2006 after apparently running
off with a Frenchman (a worrying trend started by Angela and
one I hope to avoid) and the post has been vacant until I joined
in mid November. I am originally from Norwich, (though far
too young to remember even a hint of the 12th Lancers time
there) and have been working and studying in London for the
last three years on various projects and museum collections,
including those with the Museum of London, before moving to
Belper with my wife, Tracy. I am, not ex-Lancers or military, but
a museum professional with oddly it might seem a specialty in
Roman Military History. My primary task is to steer the re-
development of the Military Gallery at Derby.
Redisplay of Regimental Museum
Finally, after about 6 years of planning and applications, and
much hard work from Viv, the military gallery at Derby Museum
is going to be re-developed in 2007/2008 with the aid of a £600K
grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), in partnership with
the 9th/12th Lancers, the Derbyshire Yeomanry, WFR (Sherwood
Foresters) and Derby City Council. The new gallery will be called
Soldier’s Story and the old will close May/June 2007 and will
unfortunately remain shut whilst the work is carried out. The
new gallery is expected to reopen August/September 2008. I may
well need volunteers to help with research, providing stories and
background, hunting for and packing up objects and other relat-
ed work at various times over the next year. Please contact me if
you want to help. Further details and news will be communicat-
ed next issue and on the military gallery’s web site:

Recent Acquisitions:
As Viv left in June 2006 and I only started in mid
November, there has been a backlog of objects
and items that needed accessioning — some of
which I still need to work on. The following is
a cross-section of those items received in 2006,
before and after Viv left:
A Lee Enfield 1896 Mark 1 0.303 Carbine stamped
9L, used during Boer War along with a leather bucket
type ‘holster’ was kindly purchased by the Regimental Museum

25 Black and white and colour
photographs relating to the
service of Derek Priddey-
Smith 12th Lancers, donated
by Derek himself. He served
with the regiment during
World War 2 until around the
mid 1950s.
Copy papers relating to the late
General Sir Richard McCreery
(who first received his com-
mission as 2nd Lieutenant
with the 9th Lancers 1914), relating to per-war exercises in
England in 1937 and later operations in France, Italy and
Tunisia. These were forwarded to us via the Regimental Secetary
by General McCreery’s son Robert.
Four black and white copy photographs relating to the service of
Frederick Deedman, 9th Lancers, WW1.
WW2 prisoner of war registration card for Robert Maguire 12th
Lancers.
A set of Blues Shoulder chain-mail fittings of Captain Leslie
Nutting, 12th Lancers, along with other items including a
Belgian Medal of Honour, kindly donated by Mrs S J Nutting
and Mrs V Sims.
A stable jacket (doubling as a mess jacket) of Major C E Bryant,
12th Lancers, who as Lieutenant was awarded a DSO for his
part in the charge at Moy 28 August 1914, along with attached
miniature medals (DSO, and 1914-1918 campaign medals). The
museum already holds a number of items relating to
v . Major Bryant, including his sword used at Moy
and so this is a particularly exciting acquisition.
Please get in touch with me if you would like
to donate or offer anything to the museum,
including photographs, objects and papers.
