team guarding a site in the Presevo Valley and Capt Matheson
using a dubious grasp of the Russian language to justify going
wherever he wanted.
As ever, an operational tour brought some curious facial hair to
the fore. Tpr ‘Doc’ Doherty’s 70s moustache, fortunately now a
thing of the past, was only outdone by LCpl ‘Jonno’ Johnson’s
boast that his extensive sideburns were the only hair on his
head. Not to be outperformed, LCpl ‘Yozza’ Hughes shaved off
all his hair and LCpl ‘Penny’ Lane turned his grey.
The return to Germany, after an extensive Cadre build-up pro-
gramme during which Tpr ‘Hippo’ Hipperson won lst prize,
saw none of the Tp actually take part in the Cadre course. Tpr
Garley visited the Bergen school of plastic surgery and Tpr
Hughes ventured forth into civilian life 7 we wish him luck.
Messrs Hughes, Johnson, Doherty, Hipperson and Wilson

had returned to A Sqn on Ex SAIF SAREEA II. For the
remainder, a chilly firing camp beckoned. The Tp ends the year
looking very different to how it began; many are away on cours-
es, and there are many new faces, ZLt Doherty steps into the Tp
Ldr’s spot but Sgt Bithell, as ever, remains.
GW Troop
It has been an exciting and constructive year for GW. After a
very chilly period of work-up training in the sub-zero tempera-
tures of the Sennelager training area, we deployed with the rest
of the Squadron to the glorious Podujevo bowl in north eastern
Kosovo. Rotating with the other troops, we became well
acquainted with the whole area, from the wood covered hills of
the Serbian boundary to the dilapidated back streets of
Podujevo. We were also lucky to be involved in operations out-
side the Battle Group’s usual area, and were witness to events
which changed the scope of the usually hazy Balkan diplomacy.
