In skiing terms, the end of the RAC and AAC championships
in Verbier on 15 January 01 saw the Regimental team’s finest
hour. Sat in a group near the front of the prize-giving hall, reg-
imental skiers passed each other going backwards and forwards
to collect prizes. With all the additional prizes donated by local
Verbier sponsors, there was genuinely too much booty to carry!
We were particularly honoured to share the experience with the
newly arrived Commanding Officer, Lt Col Martin and the
Adjutant, Capt Farrer.
Onto the nitty gritty. The A team consisted of Capt Durie, Cpl
Rutherford, LCpl Knowles, and Capt C Croft. They were unbeat-

The RAC slalom, Giant Slalom, Super-G and Downhill cups are
there to see in RHQ. If William Hill had an office in Verbier, the
second 4 would have been clear favorites to clean up all the B team
trophies. They should have won their competition but a couple
of strokes of terrible luck resulted in them being eased into 2nd
place by the KRH B Team. Despite their disappointment, it was
an excellent performance by Captain Simpson, LCpl Bennison,
Capt Preston, ZLt Eyre-Brook, Tpr White and Capt Clifford. By
achieving 2nd place in the B team competition, theybeat a major-
ity ofother Regimental A Teams. We didn’t come away unscathed
however. Tpr Sadler sustained a serious shoulder injury and bro-
ken arm in a snowboard accident. I’m skeptical, but apparently
snowboarding helps one learn to ski better. If old wives were
around when the snowboard was invented, I think they would be
telling some tales!
Whilst we trained hard, we also played hard. 9th/12th Royal
Lancers yet again hosted the New Year party in the ski bus
depot. It sounds like an unexciting venue but when the Verbier
Chalet girl contingent arrives, the cold warehouse feel gets
rather warmer! Early on in the season Capts Durie and Preston
were selected to take part in a 24hr charity ski marathon in aid
of land mine victims. The event was organized by the world
champion free style skier, Dominic Peret. (He jumps out of
small planes onto steep snowfields in Alaska and races the ensu-
ing avalanche to the bottom). Silly clothes were mandatory and
issued miners lamps were next to useless. Advice for next year;
take some night vision goggles. The whole event raised tens of
thousands ofpounds for the charity and the 12 RAC participants
assisted in enhancing the already excellent reputation of the
British Army in Verbier.
