B San Sp Tp comp/ete, SS2 , the wart/est they ever /ooked
Lt Hubbard departed the Troop to become B Squadron’s
Operations Officer, leaving Sgt ‘Snowy’ White a briefwindow of
liberty and PDR writing before poor ‘Snowy’ picked up his sev-
enth Troop Leader in the form of a transitory Captain
Matheson. Captain Matheson’s stay however, was even briefer,
Dave’s msanm/ sauce cooks an otheIW/se raw sausage
clinging desperately as he was to soldiering, before paperwork
called him away forever.
The Troop has seen both extremes of manning lows and, almost
certainly never to be repeated highs, in the course of the year.
‘Boot’ Troop went down to a die hard three as the remainder,
LCpls Flint and Casey, Tprs Cona, Charnick, Pook and Marland,
seeking excitement joined C Squadron in Podujevo, Kosovo,
returning with the central theme of this year’s training 7 an out
ofseason tan. Upon their return we found ourselves cramming an
astounding twenty into the four overworked wagons having been
joined by LCpl Wilkinson from HQ Squadron, Tprs Hatfield and
Spencer from A Squadron and Tprs Durrance, Stephens,
Beaumont and Bissett from C Squadron. There were also three
new arrivals from C Squadron; Tpr O’Sullivan who, after a seven
hour flight, spent four hours with the Troop before seeing the
error of his ways and returning to the more temperate climes of
Germany. His companions, Tprs Merritt and Bloomer however,
enjoyed the experience so much they have stayed permanently.
Of course, the bungee connecting twin Corporals James and
Godfrey had to recoil sooner or later and Cpl Godfrey was
dragged back bringing with him his Sphinx Battery experience
and strange Gunner vehicle dismount drills. LCpl Flint seems
determined to fill the gap he has left.
LCpl Flint was also responsible for achieving the seemingly
impossible and making the Regiment’s desert experience even
hotter. His ‘Dave’s Insanity Gourmet Chilli Sauce’ spread its
special breed of madness wide and even found its way to the
Colonel’s plate, much to the worry of the Troop Leader.
The return from the desert drove us headlong into swift prepa-
rations to take over the Lead Armoured Task Force role in
December i.e. digging a foot ofsand from the vehicles and read-
justing to the cold of a German winter. LCpl Casey managed
this by heading out to BATUS, Tpr Pook by going skiing, and
Tpr Marland returned to the gym with the best tan. Cpl
Godfrey and LCpl Flint depart to join the unmentionables leav-
ing Cpl James to cope untwinned with his new daughter and Sgt
White to deal with a new Troop Leader, his eighth, in Lt Wall.
Good luck to all of them.
