Year 2001
Transcription 40 REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE 9TH/12TH ROYAL LANCERS (PRINCE OF WALES’S)
In August the Mess enjoyed good sport and glorious weather
during the Polo tournament run by Major Woolley. In the
evening, a splendid supper saw many local, and not so local
Germans, plus the odd Norwegian (I) trying their hand at
removing the cork from a champagne bottle with the sabre.
Pleasingly, there were no major injuries to body or ego!
The annual Fathers’ Dinner Night held in the Mess in
November was another success story and a good number of
relatives made the journey to Bredebeck and were looked
after in fine style. Again, Schloss Bredebeck provided a
splendid canvass for our hospitality. Later in November, the
Officers flew en masse to London to attend the Annual
Dinner at the Cavalry Club. Dinner was of a very high stan-
dard and included the by now de rigeur enormous cheese
souffle and was crowned by fine speeches from the
Commanding Officer and the Colonel of the Regiment.
Another Regimental Dinner night in early December saw the
Deputy Garrison Commander, Colonel Haskell and the
Commanding Officers of SCOTS DG and 113W thoroughly
enjoying another great evening. The following weekend the
Mess hosted their ladies and again the candles were burnt down
to stubs before the guests left.
As we look forward to 2002, the Mess is in great heart with plenty
going on. Doubtless the BATUS commitments will make some-
thing of a hole in the home team throughout the forthcoming
social season but that will mean more space for those remaining
officers to root out their little black books and get more guests in!
A CB
Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess
his year, it would seem, we have been as busy as ever but
this has not stopped the mess from carrying on with its fine
traditions. Since the arrival in Hohne we have dined out a CO
and RSM and held Mons/Moy.
We started off socially this year with the traditional Valentines
fianction. Traditional in that we had a Blues Brothers tribute
band playing. Sometimes the PMC/PEC would do well to listen
to their wives. With our new found position of being in a
Garrison environment, we set about making friends and influ-
encing people. This started with a football match held against
Sgt Baz BNgnu//, ”AI/017g /ast/"
32 Engrs WO & Sgts Mess, which we won quite convincingly at
3-0. We played the rematch following a games night against the
Cpls Mess. Not surprisingly, the Mess did not perform as well.
The sight of our players being sick as they ran around the pitch
will haunt us all for many years to come. Despite having a very
newly promoted Sgt we still lost 3-0. We look forward to the
final at the end of the year.
The two games nights against the Cpls Mess that have been held
in Hohne have, as always resulted in wins for us N no matter
how much the Cpls Mess may disagree. A games night will
always be decided on the Boat Race and, with the more profes-
sional drinkers being located in the mess, it means we shouldbe
able to hold our own for the foreseeable future.
The mess had the privilege of dining out Lt Col Mackaness MBE
at the end of 2000. All had a fine and very long night. In March
we said farewell to WOl Paddy Kerr who left to go to Chillwell
for his last 6 months and the Mess wish him well for the Future.
This November we also said farewell to SSgt Steve Lindsay who
has been the long standing Mess Manager. As we had the Lancer
Band for this evening it made for an entertaining night.
The Mons Moy weekend was held in July. The mess looked
after and hosted the Old Comrades for the weekend and the Old
Comrades thanked all the Mess Members for their hospitality
and friendship. It was great to see some old faces that are now
able to attend.
