REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE 9TH/12TH ROYAL LANCERS (PRINCE OF WALES’S) 77 In July a large contingent flew out to Germany to visit the Regiment in Bergen Hohne for the Mons 7 Moy Week-End. The Regiment entertained us royally. All the messes kept Open House for most of the time so that even the most stalwart of us could not claim to being turned away from a well earned drink and the re-run of the skirmishes of Taipong or battles of the ‘Pointed Wood’ on Soltau. The Regiment staged a BBQ and a ‘Jeu sans Frontieres’ or ‘It’s a Knockout’ on Saturday afternoon and we also could attend a very interesting talk of the recent operational tour in Kosovo with a very moving account by Lt Peter Corcoran of the recent death of Trooper Slater who was Killed in Action while he was engaged in Peace Keeping Duties. That evening the Band of the Royal Lancers gave a concert outside the Bergen Hohne Round House on Saturday. Sadly the weather had deteriorat- ed somewhat and the music was accompanied by a deluge from the skies. This did not deter the band from playing superbly and the PR1 did a roaring trade in umbrellas decked out in reg- imental colures! The Regiment with Old Comrades leading, marched to the Regimental War Memorial on Sunday morning where Brigadier Pye, the Colonel of the Regiment read the lesson. After drinks in the Officers’ Mess and a quick luncheon it was on to the buses and back to Hamburg for the flight home. We are all very grate- ful to the Regiment for looking after us so well. We changed the date of the Service in Canterbury from August to September not only because the large number of tourists in August detract from the solemnity of the occasion but also in the hope that more of our members would be back from their own holidays and could attend themselves. Those who did support this very important reunion sat down for a splendid lunch in the County Hotel. Little did we know that this would be the last time Mr Des Maloney would be with us. Our Colonel-in-Chief, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother honoured us with her presence in November at the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey. After a short Service we met in the Union Jack Club for a well-earned Curry Luncheon. This was voted to be one of the best reunions we had in the Club. Near disaster was just avoided when ten days before our annual Christmas luncheon in the Duke of York’s HQ we were told that the firm of caterers, who looked after us so well in the past had gone out of business. After many frantic telephone calls we were extremely lucky that the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, rather like Blucher at Waterloo, came to the rescue! We had a superb luncheon, which not even the Southern Rail System could sabotage although they had a good try! All in all 2001 was a good year to look back on. Sadly, we lost some of our most stalwart members and their names are record- ed elsewhere in this magazine. But we are gaining new members and the Association continues to thrive. Ifyou are aware ofan Old Comrade or his widow, who served in the Regiment or one of its antecedents and who may be in need please let HHQ or one of the Committee members know.
