70 REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE 9TH/12TH ROYAL LANCERS (PRINCE OF WALES’S) 3 ~ ' 7 LCp/ Wyatt, wa/K/hg the ooulse, cohtemp/ates Bend 9 Germany that week, so it seemed that not only was he compet- ing for himself and 9/12L, but also for BFG. Luckily for him, both days went well and he was well positioned for the selection Regimental Football egimental Football in 2001 has once again seen mixed results. C Sqn deployed to Kosovo taking with them many ofthe key football players. Whilst many Regiments refused to play until they had their full squad available, the Lancers soldiered on regardless, playing as many games as possible. Whilst the results were not always in our favour, it allowed many up and coming young players the opportunity to gain valuable experience at Regimental level. Fortunately, the league rules changed for the 2000/2001 season and teams were awarded 1 point for each game played. 9/12L boasted the most matches played at 7 and having drawn 4 and lost 3, the team still attained 5th position in the league overall. The Regiment’s main rivals over the season were SCOTS DG. We met them on at least 3 occasions ~ in the league, the 2nd round of the Army Cup, and the 1st round of the Cavalry Cup. Having taken a heavy defeat in the league game, a determined 9/12L side met them again in the 2nd round of the Army Cup. After a gruelling 90 minutes, 9/12L were victorious with a 1-0 win. The Lancers then beat the AAC in the 3rd round to gain a place in the quarter final but, sadly, lost this game to the even- tual winners, 28 Engr Regt. SCOTS DG also took their revenge by beating a further depleted side in the Cavalry Cup. Last season saw Cpls “Bertie” Blunt, “Kenny” Swain, LCpls “Albert” Hall, Mike Owens and Tpr Chris Aveyard representing New p/ah for the 7stX\/ , S/Xteeh p/ayets, three bad/S {WW the oppOS/t/oh tea//se7) I day on the Thursday. Unfortunately, the group lost another two individuals due to injury The group had started with twelve and by this stage only eight remained. Of these eight, only three could be selected for the Novice Championships; the pressure was on. On the selection day, LCpl Wyatt managed two good runs out of four. This, and his previous performances during the week, proved to be enough and saw him into the championships scheduled for January 2002 7 the only BFG luge competitor! This meant that the pressure was now off for the final day of competition. From speeds of 40 km/h on Monday, he was now whistling down the track in times of 45 secs at 88 km/h (that’s 55 mph with one’s head just six inches off the hard icel), fast enough for him to finish second. He was also told that, if he kept up these sort of speeds, he’d be looking at finishing in the top 5 finish in the Army Championships. Not bad for a beginner! (Please note that, due to timing of the birth of his second child, LCpl Wyatt was unable to compete in the Army Championships). the RAC. A number of players also integrated with the local community by joining German civilian clubs and enjoyed play- ing football at the weekends. The defence of the British Army (Germany) 6 a-side competi- tion, held in September 2001, resulted in 3rd place. Still, this gained 9/12L a qualifying position in the UK finals. However, due to the Regiment’s deployment on Ex SAIF SAREEA, we were not able to take up the opportunity. Upon returning from Oman in November, the Regimental Team was re-united in Hohne. This rare luxury gave the selectors a full squad of players to choose from and the ability to field strong sides in the two league games played at the time this arti- cle was drafted. We were rewarded with a 4-1 win against 2 RTR and a 772 win against 1 (U K) ADSR (with a noteworthy 4 goals from LCpl “Gaz” Whitby) taking 9/12L to the top of the BA (G) Premier League. The football team bids a sad farewell to Cpl “Dicke” Clarke on his 3-year posting to Cyprus. Meanwhile, we will desperately be trying to play as many games as possible, including the 1st round of the Army Cup where we have drawn 1 (UK) ADSR, and the 1st round ofthe Cavalry Cup where we have drawn RDG. As 2001 closes, con- fidence remains very high for the forthcoming season and a deter- mined effort to return silver to the trophy room will ensue. CG |
