68 REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE 9TH/12TH ROYAL LANCERS (PRINCE OF WALES’S) The W/nners of the B D/WS/On Hohne Po/o Tournament nament held on a glorious sunny August weekend. There had been concern whether it would go ahead due to nightly pitch invasions from wild boars over several weeks prior to the event. Their work in looking for worms and grubs left turf better ploughed than had we contracted a local farmer! Not accepting defeat, nightly recon- naissance patrols and dawn returfrng became an obsession of the tournament organiser, which eventually ensured the pitch was ready and, ironically, after so much attention, had probably not looked better for years. A more manageable eight teams played in Volleyball t was with a hint of sadness that on looking through the journal for the year 2000 not a hint of volleyball information could be found. This year has been marginally better with the Biela Plate Inter Squadron Competition coming just in time to make an appearance before the journal 2001 went to press. A hard fought competition that as usual blew the cobwebs off the older and more mature generation and combined it with much potential from the new blood knocking on the door. HQ Squadron forged ahead to win the day with near maximum points and in second place came C Sqn hot on their heels. The competition can now serve to start the Regimental team rolling on to better things. In 2002, the August, the Delhi Spearmen with 2Lt's Simpson, Searby and Eyre- Brook, Raider Labukt and Daniel von Schulenburg won the B divi- sion tournament. The fun and achievements above would have been nigh impossible for the players, on top of other commitments, had it not been for the Stables Troop, ably run by Cpl Debell. Despite him often being found in the stables nursing a brew, he has provided knowledge and guidance to horse owners and grooms and continuity to keep the stables running smoothly. Of his multifarious duties, he is never happier than when behind the wheel of the new horsebox. This year he has been assisted by manpower from the squadrons includ- ing Cpl Russell on maintenance, Tpr Waldron, Tpr Wilson, Tpr O’Dare and Tpr Iliffe. When they have been over stretched it has been the wives who have helped out. Our thanks go especially to Helen Woolley, Juliet Fooks and Sarah Tubbs for their hard work and humour. The Regiment has three very competent and promising young play- ers, some sound ponies and a superb lorry. This is the making of a talented team who, with more interest from brother officers and some good luck with pony purchases, could be the team winning the inter Regimental in two or three years time. Between now and then much graft and dedication is needed, not to mention a great deal of patience from the rest of the Regiment who will hopefully support them in what ever way possible. MRW Lancers will host the BA(G) Championships and hopefully quali- fy a team into the Army Finals later in the year at Aldershot for the nineteenth time since 1980. It only remains to be said in time honoured tradition that Volleyball is a sport for all and all will be considered if they so wish to attend the training. No finer example of this is the RSM who rediscovered his teenage years and quantified his place in not only the Squadron team but also the Regimental team. As he did so, the attendance at training sessions miraculously tripled overnight; shocker! MW Joint Services Parachute Centre (Netheravon) to parachute and to feed the growing adrenalin require- ment of the new Second in Command. Some will know that I have an interest in all things adventurous so a posting to Netheravon in April 01 was just the ticket. Since arriving, I The JSPC(N) exists to train soldiers, sailors and airmen Capt Dur/e’s fr/end (bottom) enjoys the wmd rush/Hg past We face have quickly discovered a number of closet RAC skydivers, as yet uncoordinated. Every other Corps (except the AGC and Int Corps) have a skydive/parachute display team which perform at public events, either in conjunction with KAPE tours or simply at Army PR events. Whilst in the post I certainly hope to plan a RAC skydive expedition to the USA and will look at the possibility of establishing a RAC display team. It would be an exciting Corps asset. The problem with skydiving is the perceived ratio of fun to accessibility to cost which is something like 10:1:10. In actual fact the Regiment has a Drop Zone within 2 hours drive. I would therefore urge members of the Regiment to apply for the permanently under subscribed courses at Bad Lippspringe where the whole experience comes for free. We host several Wednesday afternoon jumpers and I know Bad Lippspringe does as well. I was glad to be able to provide space on courses at Nethers for the Regiment’s Australian and New Zealand guests, as well as sneaking Capt Croft on cheeky week in the summer. There is certainly the option for others to attend if they wish. For those with more experience in the Regiment, |
