Regimental Cricket
he summer of 2001 saw a long awaited increase in cricket-
ing activity. At the Regimental level, the team progressed as
far as the BFG final. Internally there was the time and support
to complete both the inter Sqn competition and the traditional
Officers vs SNCOs mess game.
In the first round of the Army cup the Regiment met 3 RHA,
and after a steadybatting performance, which set the opponents
a target of 161 (SSgt Keeney 71), the bowlers ensured an easy
victory crumbling the opposition for only 86 (LCpl Minto 4-15
and Cpl Edwards 2-16). The next round brought the team
against 35 Engr Regt. Once again the batting gave the bowlers
the ideal platform they needed putting 213 on the board (LCpl
Minto 68 and SSgt Keeney 90). The bowlers made short work
of the task dismissing the opposition for only 29 (Cpl Edwards
3-6 and Capt Grover 2-9). This result sent the Regiment
through to the final of the BAG Major Units competition. The
team travelled to Paderborn for the final against lGS Regt, how-
ever the start was delayed due to an untimely downpour.
Having won the toss the team decided to bat first and as for the
previous two games the batting put a very respectful 168 on the
board (LCpl Minto 90 and W02 Barnett 32). Having dismissed
each of our other opponents for under 100, the team sat confi-
dently that the target was easily defendable. Unfortunately this
was not the case and a combination of some poor bowling and
some very strong batting allowed 1 GS Regt to win the match by
5 wickets.
The revival of the inter Sqn (20 overs) competition took place on
a windy and cloudy day in July. First off was C Sqn vs B Sqn.
After dismissing C Sqn for 101, B Sqn thought they had a
Judo
udo is many things to different people. It is an enjoyable sport,
Jan art, a discipline, a recreational or social activity, a fitness pro-
gram, a means of self-defence or combat, and a way of life. Judo
comes to us from the ancient fighting systems of feudal Japan.
Founded in 1882, Judo is a refinement of the martial art ofJujitsu.
In the mid-1800s, Dr Kano, President of the University of
Education, Tokyo, studied these ancient forms and integrated
what he considered to be the best of their techniques into what is
now the modern sport of Judo. In essence, Kano used the very
best of the jujitsu throws and grappling techniques and removed
dangerous foot and hand strikes, and joint destruction tech-
niques.
The Regimental Judo team is back after a three year absence.
This absence was primarily due to a lack of resources including
mats and a suitable training hall. The 2001 team comprises Cpl

chance of upsetting the favourites but alas they disappointed
with the bat and were dismissed for only 35. The loudest cheer
ofthe game came at the run out ofW02 Barnett for only 1 in the
first over. The second match was between A and HQ Sqn. Some
spirited swinging of the bat by W02 Price saw A Sqn post a
score of 82. This proved not to be enough and after a small hitch
HQ Sqn won by 6 wickets (LCpl Minto 28 and Capt Farrer 39).
The final as always was keenly contested. C Sqn batted first and
with Sgt Rathbone hitting a lively 57 they reached a total of 92
in their 20 overs, Capt Grover with an impressive bowling spe11
(4-9) ensured that the total wasn’t out of HQ Sqns reach. After
a stuttering start HQ Sqn achieved their total with 4 wickets to
spare, Capt Farrer’s 32 (not out) easing early nerves within the
team. On the day HQ Sqn proved to be worthy winners well
done.
The traditional curtain to the season was the Officers vs SNCOs
mess game. On another cloudy September day the teams met in
a 25 over extravaganza. The SNCOs’ mess started well with the
RSM seeing out the first over from the C0. But alas they suf-
fered a mid order collapse and slipped to 107 (W02 Barnett 34
and W02 Morton 18) ensuring that the Officers had a decent
target to chase. After a slowish start the Officers reached their
target with ease (Capt Grover 37 and Capt Carpenter 24) ensur-
ing a steady 6 wicket victory. Capt Russell as a distinguished
and acclaimed batsman had a fitting tribute to his departure
from the cricketing arena scoring out 3rd ball!
With all the success of this season the Regiment will be looking
forward to the next year on the cricket field and the develop-
ment and encouragement of young players.

from A Squadron, and Tprs Iliffe, Westhead, Hipperson,
Durrance, Hopkins and Thompson from C Squadron.
Having joined a German Judo club in Soltau in mid-2001, the
team gained valuable fighting experience. Language has not been
too much of a problem as all Judo terminology is in Japanese -
that is, no matter where in the world Judo is practised, the termi-
nology is identical. By the end of the year, all seven novice team
members grasped the fundamentals of Judo and successfully pro-
gressed to the rank of 9th Kyu. The team is now working hard
preparing for the Army Novice Judo Championships which are
scheduled for January 2002. The team hope to recapture some of
the former glory of the Regimental Judo Team of 1 992-95. Results
will be published in next year’s Regimental journal.
