LCp/ Franks pram/cos a SWerman’s oata/ogue pose
fault!) proved too much for some. We lost Cpl ‘I’odujevo’s Most
Wanted’ Broadhurst to his Crew Commanders course and LCpl
‘Lil’ Will’ Williams to Sgt Yearwood’s Search Team. Some
sought solace elsewhere: Tpr Parker in his DVD collection, Tpr
Foster in his DPM bible and LCpl Whitworth in his Slimfast
plan. Others threw themselves into their roles: Cpl Howardpre-
tended it was Northern Ireland (but warmer), Tpr Byrd pre-

tended that the tour was an enthusiasm contest, and Tpr
Leathers pretended to enjoy himself (to the eXtent that he final-
ly fooled himself!).
The troop was broken up for the first and only time at the begin-
ning of April, as the troop leader hand picked the very best crew
to partake in Op TRAFALGAR 7 a ZRTR mission to monitor eth-
nic Albanian movement along the southern Kosovo and
Macedonian border. By accident (?) those selected -Tprs Mitchell
and Slater - had both signed off prior to the tour.
On Friday 13th April, the realities and the dangers of our task were
harshly reminded as C 40 suffered a mine strike from a TMA 3,
resulting in the death of Tpr Slater Great credit must go to Tpr
Mitchell who, stranded alone in a suspected minefield, encouraged
Tpr Slater during his final moments to hold on whilst the alarm
was raised. Out of this tragedy, it has been a great pleasure to wel-
come Tpr Slater’s parents, Terry and Jean, and his brother Julian
to the bosom of the Regiment, and to admire them in their digni-
ty as they grieve. During this testing time, one must thank Lt
Searby (the proverbial rolling substitute) and Sgt Carter for main-
taining the morale and the motivation of the troop, and indeed
commend the boys for the way they all responded.
