he past year saw some very important staff changes in Home
Headquarters. Early in January Captain Stuart Hardy joined
the team as Assistant Regimental Secretary. Many may remember
him as RQMS and later as Technical Quartermaster in the
Regiment. He has taken over the running of the Old Comrades
Association and the Museum. Mrs Angela Tarnowski of course
remains as Curator in Derby. He also shares with the Regimental
Secretary the processing of grants to individual applicants from
the Charitable Association. Originally HQ DRAC asked us
whether we could manage the office with a staff cut from three to
two! But with help from the then Director of the Royal Armoured
Corps, which was very much appreciated, it was decided to
increase our establishment to bring it into line with most of the
other Cavalry Home Headquarters. Mrs Twickel, who worked in
the office temporarily, when Mrs Hickman retired, has now left to
do other things. Mr Suresh Mamnani, who is a trained book-
keeper, is now the office manager. Mrs Cornwall of course contin-
ues to be in charge of all of us at Home Headquarters. 1 am very
grateful for all the help and support I get.
HHQ is now connected to the Internet. Our Web-Site is proving to
be very popular judging from the number of ‘hits’ we get each week.
Apart from general information about the Regiment, the Museum,
the Old Comrades Association and the Charitable Association we
publish our annual Newsletter, a forecast of events and notice board
information. The Web-Site also has an answer facility. So anyone
who uses the Internet can either e-mail us at the address which is
given above or contact us through our Web-Site.

e continue to have a well-supported Old Comrades
Association with a very active Committee. The number of
Old Comrades subscribing to our Newsletter and the Journal is
increasing and we are delighted that so many come to our many
reunions and functions. We would like to remind readers that
everyone, who was a member of the Regiment, its antecedents
and the 27th Lancers is automatically a member of the OCA.
The first event in 2001was our Museum Day in Derby when
Colonel Maitland Titterton gave us a very interesting talk
about the mechanisation of the 12th Royal Lancers. He was
ably supported by Major Douglas McMeeken who used all his
old contacts in the RAC D&M School to produce slides and
pictures of the various vehicles that were issued to the
Regiment over the years.
That evening we all gathered again at The Spot in Derby for our
annual Derby Reunion that is organised by Pete and Pauline
Jordan. It is entirely due to their hard work and ability that this
event is the success it is. Each year both of them organise a live
band, a raffle and plenty of food and drink so that many past and
present members come along and enjoy the filn.
Later, in April Ken and Liz Draper invited us down to Weymouth
to our Wessex Reunion. This always coincides with the Grand
National at Aintree. After an excellent lunch in the Glenbum Hotel
we placed our bets and settled down to watch the racing. Again, this
was a very successful event and we all had a great time together.
This year 9/12L were chosen to sponsor the Cavalry Memorial
Parade. On the Saturday night before, we met as usual for the
Old Comrades Association AGM which was followed by our
annual Dinner in the Duke of York’s HQ. Attendance was
excellent and 119 sat down to dinner. The following morning
was warm and sunny when we gathered in Hyde Park. Brigadier
Hugh Pye commanded the parade, General Mike Swindells
commanded the 9/12L contingent which was as well supported
as some of the other regiments, which had recently amalgamat-
ed and General the Viscount Monckton took the salute.
