B Squadron
As part of the overall restructuring of
the RAC which took place this year,
the Regiment has reorganised ll’tlo
tour identical Sabre Squadrons As a
result the organisation of B Squadron
has undergone a major change, Up to
Christmas and prior to the move to
Woltenbuuel, the Squadron, under
the command ol Major Strtidley,
operated as the Close Reconnaissance
Squadron of the negimem We had a
separate operational role thh each 0!
our 5 close reconnatssance troops
leach of 8 CVRlTl Scimitarsl working
independently under the command of
different Battle Groups Although
SHQ was responsible lot nth-attacks
training and adniiritstraliori, mi
exerCise each troop disappeared to the
Command of another unit, while SHO
became available for redeployment as
seen fit by RHQ, This less lliari
satisfactory solution has now been
rectilted and, With the move to
Wolfebuttel, B Squadron has been
reduced in strength lmainly to
supplement the newly tot med D
Squadron) lt IS now CI Standard
Menirum Reconnaissance Squadron,
As a result ol this change, the
Squadron notes this year are in two
distinct parts; the first part dealing
With the period before restructuring
and, the second part covering the
period since restructuring and our
rtiove to Wolteributtel
Pro-Restructure Period
(May 83 -— Jan 84)
ln Hohiie, because of the peculiar role
of the Squadron, SHQ troop had a
fairly uneventful year compared With
the rest of the Squadron, most at
whom managed to get to BATUS
Canada With their various attilrated
Battle-Groups Even so SHO had its
share of exotternent and the 3/«i tori
Landrovet Command Vehicles lReirl7
arRover) managed to clock up high
mileages throughout the year, with or
Without flat Iyresl Flat tyres seemed to
bug us all year. even in France we
tlidii‘t escape
Each troop was atftlialed to its own
BattleGroup in lsl Armoured DiVISIOll
for training and exetmses as follows:
lSl Troop —3rd 3“ The Queens Hegt
2nd Troop 714th/20th Kings Hussats
3rd Troop 7 3rd Bit Royal Green
Jackets
filth Troop 715t Bn Coldstream Guards

The year started wtth
Troop/Squadron traintng in
Lagenburg Bavaria on Exercise
Mountain Goat in May. This was sadly
to be SSgt Hardy's last exercise with
lst Troop, on his return he departed
for the easier climes of C Squadron
Stores as SQMS. Exercise Mountain
Goat, although starting oft as good
fun, soon turned into a miserable mud
oath, even though we had got used to
being permanently wet alter the last
Gunnery Camp
Two upsets i‘or 2nd Troop on this
exercise were losing Cpl Gorge and
his crew to another troop arid the
troop leader, Lt Reed, getting sltghtly
’disonentated' on Troop Tests 7 both
managed to surVive!
3rd Troop took tout members ol 3
RGJ, a Captain and three NCOs, Wiih
them to Bavaria on Troop training
They had all been trained as B3
Harden gunners and were now to be
trained in close reconnaissance tactics
in preparation Tot the handover ot
roles at the end of the year. The
exercise in Bavaria proved successlul
for 3rd Troop under the command of
Capt Routledge and they again carried
otl Troop Tests, for the second year
running
