WO's and SGT's Mess
On reading through the last two issues
ol the Regimental Journal, l notice the
Infamous 'Rycrolt Summer Bell has
attracted a lot of attention. This year,
ol course, it Will only warrant a short
note. That is only to say that, at last,
we have now fully recovered from it.
1983 has been a relatively quiet,
although successful, year lot the
Mess, Ol course the change of RSMs
is always a major event, and the Mess
soon settled down to new ways llt is
the first time We heard English spoken
from the top table). We dined out Lt
Jones in traditional style in June, he
was last seen staggering in the
direction of the Officers’ Mess
muttering something about 'domies’
and whether ‘Tomo could be
commtssloned‘ We congratulate him
on his promotion and Wish him and
Shirley all the best for the future
Shortly after the change‘ we saw
the arrival of the OCA and Mons/Moy
was once again With us. As usual we
saw the return of many old friends and
I'm sure they all eritcyed their, all too
short, stay With us With the OCA this
year we also welcomed members of
HMS Brazen Once Mons/Moy had
been explained to them, they threw
themselves into the celebrations With
the usual Naval gusto I was going to
say l'm sure we wtll see more of them
in the future but realise we
reciprocated the VlSll,W|ll1 some of
our Mess members vrsitirig the ship
Since then we have heard remarkably
little from them [It couldn't have
anything to do With the RSM‘s choice
remarks about onvboard sleeping
arrangements, could ll7l, I’m sure
many Mess members would like to see
them again and we look forward to
their next visit.
Sadly, the formal dancing
instruction finished, With those who
attended reaching untold helghts. 'The
team' gave a brilliant demonstration ol
several dances during Mons/May,
Strangely enough the finishing of the
dancmg saw the start of the Mess
Sunday Football League, we didn’t
score many goals, but no - one could
critiCise the footwork!
Then there was the Christmas
Draw. The committee set to and
produced some magnilicent prizes,
The Mess, in keeping With the times,
decrded on a ’high tech’ approach and
used computer digital selection. The
operator was the only member of the
committee not to win a
prizeleparerrtly the HSM now has a
lull service ol Regimental plates),
After the Christmas and New Year
lestrvrties the Mess lurnishings started
to be packed, ready for our move to
Wolfenbilttel, The Advance Party ol
the Welsh Guards arrived iust prior to
the Christmas Draw and started to
settle in. Our own Advance Party
departed for Wclfenbuttel and straight
into community relations viz vrsrting
the Local Brewery. (This must have
been a success because we still sell
their beerl. It was at this time that our
Mess Caterer, Sgt John Savrlle, left

for the PFll, John has glven two years
of hard, devoted service as caterer
and, I am sure, everyone toms in
thanking him let the work he did. In
his place we have Mess Manager
‘Simon' Garrington, who is now
settling in and tindlng his feet. Long
before Simon's time, the Mess had
been in Woltenbijittel. The 12th
Lancers served here in the late fifties
and, l am sure, many Old Comrades
Will have tales to tell at those days at
the forthcoming Mons/May
celebrations
During the year, we have said sad
farewells to many old friends, They
Will all be missed and we hope they
will return to visit us in the future.
With promotions and the move, we
now have many new laces and we
welcome these
We look lorward to settling down in
our new home.
