THESTH/IZTH ROYAL LANCtRs RtaiMENrAt JOURNAL The only practical way of lravelling long distances was by helicopter, although a trials motorbike allowed superb freedom in the areas around Port Stanley. Mines were, however, a problem, although most area had been cleared and known minefields were fenced off. I had two very narrow escapes , on one occasion, I actually trod on two detonators, fortunately for anti , tank mines, hidden next to a tussock of grass. At a later date, the front wheel of my motorbike missed seven live anti apersonnel mines by a matter clinches. It was not a pleasant experienoel In general though, the discomfort and isolation was more than compensated for by a fascinating JOb', interesting people, plenty of free time in which to get out to enioy the unequalled scenety, and sea , trout tishing. Given the chancel but no' it might put ideas in people’s heads! NMTS Messrs Starrmd 9/12L and Langlands ooc With a day‘s catch at Frying Pan Creek l \ SMILEY Milton? l, |
