Officers' Mess
The main features of last year were the
visit to Langenburg, the dance iri
August and the move to Wolfenbuttel.
ln tact, il i then said that a lot of
Pimrns was drunk, a fair few ladies
paraded and mentioned a few names,
i could stop writing now and we would
all be happy You would not be bored
and I could nurse my hangover,
However, there l5 a new Editor and, in
the words ul Mrs Cornwall at Home
Headquarters, ‘lie iriglttens me to
death', and so i shall ramble on
During last May we were lucky
enough to be allowed to Troop Train
in Baden Wurturriberg. The move
down was lengthy it not tortuous, the
weather was appalling but little could
disguise the beauty of the countrySide
and surrounding houses and villages,
or the hospitality of the local people.
As a study of human behavtour
much amusement was derived from
watching the officer heirarchy
attempting to upstage one another
With the quality of their headquarters
and accommodation; shooting lodges
to air bases to private suites in
Schlosses leven a complete squadron
undercover in one Schlossl. Fittingly
the Colonel had the test laugh With the
dinner party in Schloss Lagenberg, the
home of Furst and Furstln Zu
Hohenlohe Langenberg it was an
evening of musrc, colour and
pageantry, with a parade and band
concert in the imposntg courtyard,
iollowed by a glittering dinner, Itselt a
masterpiece oi organisation by the
Mess Staff and the Cooks. A large
amount of Regimental silver brought
down for the occasron was
complemented and enhanced by the
beautiful dining room and even more
stunning ladies!
0n the next day a small team
headed to Baden Baden for a day at
the races. After backing three winners
’on the trot’, they invested heavily on
the one Engtish iockey In the
Steeplechase, the ‘coup' being
thwarted tn the last stride!
concoction With which to start the
eventng rolling, an aeroplane With lots
of empty seats and, as expected, a
truly superb party, One of those very
rare evenings where the main dance
floor was still crowded well into the
early hours. The less said about the
discotheque the better, where the
Rhythm Method was tried for the first
time i this IS an ’iniokel’l.
Plans tor the big dance were laid in
some detail during the Autumn ot
l982, reVised in the tollowtng Spring,
totally changed the next month, and
ltnally put into effect over one hecllc
week in August. Davtd Strudley
headed the committee, a motley crew
of artistic genii whose main claims to
tame were the biggest marquee you
ever did see; a cabaret or extract from
’Apocalypse Now' during dinner which
no - one actually saw, a red and yellow

dance plans meant that the party tell

on the second day at the Hohne Polo
Tournament. it was a memorable
weekend, in blaZing sunshine
throughout, culminating in a Royal
Hussars barbecue which
demonstrated a novel method of
catering. It can be best summed up as
whenever you opened your mouth. or
indeed raised your eyes above the
level of the table, you were liable to be
’otfered‘ any of a variety of what must
have been deticious food, delivered at
near supersonic velocity
