to use them! After plenty of creeping up on the enemy, who
luckily turned out to be short sighted and definitely hard of
hearing, we ‘captured’ enough bottles to ensure a good night was
had by all.
After not a great deal of sleep (not helped by rumours of wild
boar sharing our camp) we were woken by fire crackers at 6.30
am. After a quick breakfast we packed up our camp and set off
back to the barracks. Here we fired a few simulated missiles
(SWIG) and had a go firing a rifle at a moving target (SAT).
This was all good fun and lucky for the targets our aim probably
wasn’t all it should have been.
Feeling decidedly worse for the wear we arrived at the assault
course for some PT with Sgt James. ‘This will be fun’ we
thought. We hadn’t met Sgt James before.... So off we set, full
of enthusiasm. Having leopard crawled through sand, under
wires he assured us were electrified, we were beginning to won-
der whether maybe we should have had an early night after all.
With a lot of (loud) encouragement we made our way around the
assault course to be informed we would now repeat it as a race
between the two teams. But first we were lead off in the oppo-
site direction. Maybe, just maybe this was a wind-up afterall.
No, just a little surprise to start us off which involved crawling
through a 30 metre tunnel with a stream running through. This
was testing to say the least, but one look from Sgt James and off
we went! Exhausted we completed our second lap of the assault
course in one piece to the accompaniment of cheers from the
team leaders and DS, and the occasional smoke grenade to add
a little ‘atmosphere’.
To top it all offwe had a refreshing dip in the Garrison pool, oh
and did the Army swimming survival test still dressed in full
desert combats but without the boots! And that was the end, all
we had to do now was hand back our kit and steer our aching

limbs to the barbecue where Major Reid handed out some well
earned prizes.
All the wives who took part in STILLETO LANCER 03 agreed
that it was a brilliant weekend, and whilst it was challenging and
demanding it was also very rewarding. In the weeks that fol-
lowed many wives were to be found around camp comparing
bruises 7 and pretty impressive they were too!
All the Directing Staff entered into the spirit of things with such
enthusiasm and without them this weekend would not have
been possible. We owe everyone involved in running the exer-
cise a huge thank you for all the time they gave up, all their
patience (SWIG does not come naturally to all of us) and espe-
cially for all their enthusiasm. We certainly could NOT have
done this weekend without them, well maybe we could - but we
would probably still be wandering around Hohne ranges to this
day

The Mightiest Wives
his year’s SSAFA summer fair at Fallingbostel included a
Tug ofWar between the Wives’ Clubs from the Garrisons at
Celle, Hohne and Fallingbostel. Needless to say the 9th/12
Lancers put forward an awesome team, trained by Capt Rhodes
at fairly short notice!
Three days before the great day, Capt Rhodes showed us one
end of the rope from the other as well as a few ‘techniques’ that
would help us on our way. After a few practise pulls against
some willing volunteers we staggered home hardly able to put
one foot in front of the other.

The day of the fair arrived, and with knees trembling (I speak
for myself here) we gathered for a last minute briefing from our
coach and walked out on to the pitch wearing our 9/12 L shirts
with pride. I won’t talk you through every ‘pull’, suffice to say
there were ten of them and we came up against some pretty
scary opposition. Needless to say we won every pull and came
away with a very smart cup engraved with ‘The Mightiest
Wives’. So if ever you were in any doubt, now you know.
