60 REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE 9TH/12TH ROYAL LANCERS (PRINCE OF WALES’S) Old Comrades Association President Major General RV Searby CB ES Nelson Esq Chairman Captain SP Hardy Mr wF Brown Hon Secretary Mr JW Smith Mr P Davitt Hon Treasurer Mr AM Montgomery Mr T Gent Members: Colonel AP Gilks DL Mr NAS Higginson Lieutenant Colonel PGF Lort-Phillips Mr PK Jordan Major RM Collins Mr M] Lewis Major W Grant Mr ND Priddey-Smith Captain ONG Scholte Mr R Ward he year started with a new event on the OCA calendar that of the Northern Officers’ dinner which was held in York. A total of 21 attended and a most enjoyable time was had by all so much so that the event bypopular demand will be held again in April 2004. Still in March, Museum Day was held at Derby Museum 7 the theme being the mechanisation of the 9th and 12th Lancers. Colonel Maitland-Titterton (Chairman of the Museum Trust) organised the day which everyone enjoyed. Still with the Museum our congratulations go to Angela Tarnowski (Curator) and her husband on the birth of their first child Adam. The Derby reunion was held at the Spot Nightclub in the evening. Over 300 attended and it is getting more popular every year, it was nice to see a larger contingent of younger old comrades but that’s not to say that is was not nice to see the old and bold too. It was also nice to see quite a few serving soldiers including the Commanding Officer and the RSM. Our thanks must go to Mr Pete Jordan and his wife and all those associated in organising this event. And long may it continue. Then on into April, the Wessex reunion once again was held at Weymouth organised by Mr and Mrs Draper. Our thanks to them both for all their hard work in organising the day which is proving more popular every year. May was a very busy month which started with the laying-up of the Old Guidon at Derby cathedral. Originally it was envisaged to have a Freedom Parade combined with the laying-up of the Old Guidon but because of the political climate and war in the Middle East it was decided just to have the Cathedral service fol- lowed by a lunch which was held at the City Rooms Derby. Everyone who attended had a most enjoyable day. Our thanks to the serving Regiment for making the occasion that little bit more special for those Old Comrades who served under the Old Guidon and in some cases were escorts and bearers. This was followed by the OCA AGM and reunion dinner held at the Duke of York’s barracks London on Saturday 10th May prior to the Combined Cavalry Parade held on the Sunday in Hyde Park. Both events were well attended and culminated with an officers luncheon at the RAF Club and drinks in the Tea Clipper Pub for those who preferred a liquid lunch. July came with our annual pilgrimage to the regiment stationed in Bergen-Hohne to celebrate Mons Moy, and I am sure that all those that attended would like to thank the serving regiment for making all the OCA not just welcome but for making every indi- vidual feel special. The manners and politeness which was shown by All Ranks of the regiment towards the Old Comrades was of the highest standard as was everything which was organ- ised for the benefit of the OCA. The service in Canterbury Cathedral was attended by 27 Old Comrades which alleviated the worries of last year when it was thought that we may have to drop the event from our calendar due to a fall in numbers. However, the day went fine culminat- ing with an excellent lunch at the County Hotel Canterbury. Again we gathered at Westminster Abbey for the annual Poppy Planting ceremony. This year we were honoured with the pres- ence of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. This was followed by a light lunch at the Union Jack Club. Finally, we held our traditional Christmas luncheon in the Duke of York’s HQ London. This event gets more popular every year 7 although a line was drawn when someone asked the Assistant Regimental Secretary if he could dress up as Father Christmas! Finally, it is with great sadness that I have to report the death of the following Old Comrades: Brigadier The Lord Grimthorpe OBE DL Colonel DG Thompson CBE MC TD Lieutenant Colonel JE St C Smallwood Lieutenant Colonel ARFNZ Twickel Major JDF Crossley Major RW Harden MC Major JR Henderson CVO OBE Major MJM Humble-Crofts MVO Major HR Taylor-Whitehead MHG Bradstock Esq IG Pinckney Esq MrJ Barber Mr JP Fitzsimmons Mr JD Godden Mr R Lee Mr H Lockwood Mr FW Puplett Mr LG Smith MrJH Stammers BEM Mr SP Tate Mr BF Thomas Mr RH Underwood Mr AD Vidler Mr FG Williams |
