Redisplay of Regimental Museum
The project planning stage of the redevelopment work is pro-
gressing. The bid for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund
towards the project planning work was successful, and so, dur-
ing the next 12 months a variety of work will be carried out.
The redisplay is a slow process, but the working party is work-
ing hard with the encouragement of all of the Regiments
involved.
Recent Acquisitions
In the summer 2003, the 9th/12th Lancers presented the
Regimental guidon to the Museum. A special ceremony was
held at Derby Cathedral, those present included: the Colonel of
the Regiment; the Commanding Officer; the Lord Mayor of
Derby; a contingent from the Regiment; and the Old Comrades
Association. The day was a success with a convivial lunch held
at the City Rooms in Derby.
The guidon is an excellent addition to the Museum’s collections,
but before it can be incorporated into the display, or packed up
for temporary storage, it is undergoing some conservation work.
The Museum is committed to caring for the items that it col-
lects, which is why items like guidon are taken to the conserva-
tors for a few running repairs. By conserving items, we are
helping to strengthen the fabric of the items to ensure their
longevity.
Another new acquisition is a 12th Lancer side drum. This
caused some interest when we first heard about it; as familiar as
we all are with the Regimental kettle drums, we were unaware of
the existence of the smaller side drum. Some research through
the Regimental Albums produced the photographic evidence we
were looking for, and the drum was generously purchased and
added to the collections by the Museum Trustees.
It is important to collect a wide variety of items covering all
aspects of military life, and often items collected for one pur-
pose, such as the photograph album that helped to validate the
drum, can really add context to other items in the collection.
This is particularly the case when it comes to displaying medals.
Amongst the medals that have
been donated to the Museum this
year are: the medals of 9th Lancer
RSM AE Blandford, donated by
his son Mr NE Blandford; the
medals of Sgt Angus McLachan,
9th Lancer, with Military Medal
and bar which he was awarded
when serving with the Army
Field Artillery Brigade during -
World War One, given to the
Museum by his grandson, Mr
Otley; and the 1st World War
Memorial Plaque of Pte Edward
Dudman, 12th Lancer, donated
by his nephew.
I cannot list all of the items that have been generously donated
to the Museum here, but here are a few other items of interest:
Major MB Reynolds donated his grandfather’s, Lt AB Reynolds
12th Lancer, photograph album. AWorld War 2 silk escape map
was given by Mr M de Burgh, 9th Lancer. The map had
belonged to his uncle, 9th Lancer Lt Col JR Macdonell. Fifteen
12th Lancer albums from the Sergeant’s Mess have been
deposited with the Museum, they cover the period from the
1880’s to the 1910’s.
Your Regimental Museum is always on the look out for new
acquisitions for the collections. Please get in touch if you have
something you would like to offer the Museum.
