Band of the 9th Queen’s Royal Lancers and Former Colleagues
from the Regiment Old Comrades Association
As I mentioned in my report of last year the Band members
are pleased to welcome our former Regimental Colleagues
into our Association which in future will be known as “Band of
the 9th Queen’s Royal Lancers and Former Colleagues from the
Regiment Old Comrades Association”. Our membership is in
excess of ninety and still growing.
Close on seventy husbands and wives sat down to dinner at our
sixth Annual Reunion weekend held at the Monkbar Hotel,
York in August last year. We were honoured by the presence at
the Saturday night dinner of Colonel The Honourable Nick
Crossley OBE TD DL and Colonel Mike ffWoodhead OBE and
Mrs Woodhead. Both these officers have given us tremendous
support over the past twelve months for which we thank them.
I also welcome to our ranks Captain Eric Broadhurst and Major
Brian Gatensbury, Sid West, Peter Hamer, Ted Sykes, Pat
Morgan, Ralph Strickland, ]oe] Mulvihill, Bob Inglis and from
Louisiana USA ]ames Brown, all from the Regiment. I mustn’t
forget the Band, Allan Clarke, a Yorkshireman and former clar-
inet player joined us in time for the last reunion.
A fresh supply of ties have been ordered to cover the new intake
and Geoff Bridge has obtained another 20 lapel badges to make
sure the new recruits are not improperly dressed. Thanks
Geoff. The most important event to take place over the past
twelve months has been the tracing of our Bandmaster’s grave
in a churchyard near Wareham in Dorset. Warrant Officer HB
Clarke is no longer “missing” but due to the efforts of our col-
league, Dennis Williams, he now has a known grave where we
can pay our respects to him if we
are in the area. Furthermore, Pat
Morgan who lives in nearby
Bournemouth has volunteered to
tend the grave and keep it in good i
order.

I recently wrote to Major Moule
inviting him to our next Reunion
7 however like all of us he is not
as young as he was and had to
reluctantly decline the invitation.
However, we have placed the
Major on our mailing list for our v.
newsletter, The Lancer to keep
him up to date with our goings
on. The past year although very much a success in a lot ofways
was not without it’s downside 7 we lost Terry Thorn, only weeks
after the August Reunion, a former Band President Brigadier
The Lord Grimthorpe died and Colonel Twickel died in tragic
circumstances - on behalf of all our members I send sincere con-
dolences to the respective families and, in the case of Colonel
Twickel, our sympathy is also extended to his working col-
leagues at Home Headquarters.
Finally, ifany former 9th Lancer wishes to join us please contact
me on 0161 764 0186 or email wd.haydock@ta1k21.com
Regards, Wm Denis Haydock
