After the war the Station was taken over by the RAF and used as a Police Dog Training Unit and Empire Signals School until 1975 when the barracks was reassigned to the Army. 13/18}! were the first Regiment to be stationed at Carver Barracks, as it dame to be known. in the armoured recce role. Although modernised. many of the old buildings are still intact and the runway system still exists. The old No 3 Aircraft Hangar. a huge structure. houses D Squadron pending the erection of purpose built garage space, Also a tenuous link with the RAF still exists In that the local ATC have their Head- quarters in the old Dog Training School just off the main runway. and the Civil Aviation Authority have a secondary radar installation on the western peri- meter. The Married Quarter situation is still ' far from satisfactory. Accommodation on camp does not meet the requirements of a recce regiment. although plans are in hand for the construction of 20 more Married Quarters in Carver Barracks. In the meantime. the overspili is housed at RAF Watton and North Weald but will soon be concentrated at the Queen’s Depot at Bassingbom. Generally. every- one is satisfied with the quarters in amp The people of Saffron Walden and Ihe hamlets nearby may be considered in two catergories: the indigenous pop- ulation and the London commuters. Both factions are friendly and tolerant of the military, although there are occasional complaints about tracked movement and jogging soldierly bodies on common land. However, these are balanced by the many requests for dis— plays at local fetes and jamborees. Relationships with the local police are very good. More often than not military troublemakers are returned to the Guardroom in the knowledge that military justice is likely to be swifter and more effective. for petty offences. than the civilian system.
