Year 1986
Transcription THE 9TH/l2TH ROYAL LANCERS REGIMENTAL JOURNAL
D Squadron
After an interesting twelve months
with the Squadron showing a flexible
approach to life it is time to reflect on
the past evens. This is best done by look-
ing at each of the Troops separately.
but not before the successes of the Squ-
adron are first noted. These stretch from
Rugby to Gunnery. This year we won
the inter Squadron mgby and competed
with varying degrees of success in the
other events but in none as well as in
cross country.
The Adjutant, Captain Robertson,
joined the Squadron for gunnery camp
while the 21C Captain Reed, was acting
as RGO. Captain Robertson’s practiced
safety brief assisted a “brave” effort in
the December gunnery camp and helped
us achieve an A Grade in March,
Major Hopkinson took the reins in
December and had the Squadron quak-
ing. During the Regimental Exercise his
master plan incorporated guarding
thirteen bridges and frustrating the
other Squadrons for three days! For a
closer look at the year's work let us take
a closer look at the troops.
SHQ Troop
Continuity is not the game
When SHQ you have as name
For ever the leaders come and go,
So what chance have the ranks below!
Maj Hutchins was the first to go,
He set the standards we all know.
He left behind his Batco Wallet,
With egg yoke still splattered on it,
Next to go was the engine man,
Who went nowhere without his chip pant
It was of course our friend Nosh, (Cpl
Grubb)
The LAD must feel the loss.
Then we said goodbye to Steady Dick
(Sgt Allen)
And also his baby sitter Tpr Pick,
Also LCpl Bryand and Tpr Keen,
The men whom coveralls have never
seen.
26
Goodbye also to the nose, (Tpr Ducker)
as a PT] he was only a pose.
LCpl Francis for his brief stay,
From the tank park now will never
stray.
Capt Jones then got in the chair,
Or was it Capt Reed, no, he was in the
air!
Never the less between the two,
The Squadron had an Officer in SHQ,
Maj Hopkinson now runs D,
His "overs” and ”outs” we never see;
But all the same he’s “very brave”,
Or so the Adjutant, Captain Robertson,
says.
Hello then we say to Sgt Bot, (Sgt Hart—
well)
'I‘ool checks seem to be his favourite
job,
Also, what’s going on, where' we going,
LCpl Powell
Who one day will decide when to walk
the aisle,
Tpr Holley, whose now seen some time,
But maybe that's best left behind,
And Tpr Martin, our newest guy,
Whose very quiet and a bit shy.
LCpl Cunningham, recently promoted,
Shows that in SHQ your skills are noted;
But what about the famous few,
Who always seem to be in SHQ.
There's Capt Reed our 21C,
Without him where would the accounts
be?
With W02 Sewell survival‘s on the
brain,
But about worms he’s gone insane.
Then there’s our signals men, Sgt Duff,
Who hates to admit its all a bluff!
Cpl Stunell, or “Stan the Man",
He’s the reason BFT's began!
And of course Cpl Woods who likes to
eat,
For him a dozen bratties and chips is
no mean feat.
Then there’s permanent send LCpl
McGann,
Who's never stopped since the day he
began.
LCpl Lenihan, for him I daren‘l say,
The Naafi manageress doesn’t get in
the way.
LCpl Morris, our Squadron clerk,
Without his contacts we'd be in the
dark.
Tpr Gelsthorpe the Squadron medic.
On occasions he treated more than a
headache.
For LCpl Radbourne we should give a
special verse,
Because when you mention “Tank
Park" he’s off in reverse
A lot of names but very few hands
To do the work D Squadron demands;
But a smile you‘ll see, and efficient job
done.
To ensure D Squadron's properly run!
let Troop
The troop has had an interesting year
with Sgt Heggs recently promoted, and
posted, Cpl Yorke filling his space. Mr
Pooley took over as the troop leader and
had a good feeling when it all went well,
but not many know when he had that
feeling!
The highlight of their year was a trip
to Berlin “Adventurous Training", at-
tached to the troop was Trooper Pick,
who later joined, and Cfn Evans. The
aim of the trip was to give the troop an
understanding of the relevance of Berlin
to their role in BAOR, or so we are to
believe! They visited Spandau Prison,
the Russian War Memorial and the
Bandenburg Gate, and had dinner at
Hotel Moskau, in the East. Plenty of
Champagne and Caviar: was had, a
novel experience for all bar Tpr Grice
who claimed to live on it!
Tpr (David Bailey) Wragg proved to
be wasted when he got can-ied away with
Cpl Yorke‘s camera at the Blue Cath-
edral. In the meantime Tpr Adams,
