W05 and SGTs MESS
We enter into our final year in Wolf-
enhuttel casting our minds back on
another successful and eventful period.
We celebrated 25 years of the amal-
gamation of the 9th Queen’s Royal
Lancers and the nth Royal Lancers so
the Mons/Moy parties went on just a
bit longer; the Committee organised a
superb ball on the Saturday night which
was enjoyed by everyone and highly
praised by the OCA. Once again old
friendships were renewed and new ones
stmek up. During the weekend the OCA
said farewell to RSM CC Whitehead
with speeches and presentations. Later
the Mess dined out RSM Whitehead,
who is off to Hohne as Garrison RSM.
We welcomed RSM M F Todd back
from the steaming jungles of Brunei.
The new Master Chef, W02 Thorne,
arrived just in time for the Mons/Moy
celebrations; he, like his predecessors,
does an excellent job and hm maintained
the same high standard throughout the
year.
The Christmas function went very
well with W02 Brian Banks as compete
but we do not think he will ever be
called on to do “The Oscar Awards".
THE 9TH/IZTH ROYAL LANCERS REGlMENTAL JOURNAL
The second Gunnery Camp in three
months was next on the programme;
ailtheSQMSsonrangekeepingoneeye
on it, the other looking for the RSM,
While holding the mandatory cup of
tea and asking “Who’s feeding D Sqn
Today?"
Probex came and went with the usual
exchange of ideas between the Ameri-
cans, French and British at the custom-
ary functions after the probe. The
RSM at this time found out the true
meaning of the "dizzy probe".
A families lunch was called for and
arranged. The BSM. last to get up.
found only a table for two but needed
three. so a quick move was caUed for.
We did not notice if he was wearing his
“George Boots". (Ref Journal Mess
notes 1985). It was about this time that
Sgt Saxton totally refused to spoon feed
the youngest member in his charge.
The Mess has seen a few changes of
managers since the last Journal. First,
Sgt Dick Nash took over from SSgt Jim
Bond who went on as SQMS HQ Sqn.
it did not take long for Dick to get into
the job. he was seen regularly taking
the pill with one hand while holding his
aching head with the other. Sgt Ken
Myler took over, Sgt Dick Nash went
to the families office. By the look on
his face sometimes its hard to know
which Ken likes best. Mess Manager or
ferrets.
No article about the Sgts Mess would
be complete without a mention to the
following on their achievements and
promotions during the year. First W02
SSM Simpson on receiving the BEM in
the New Year's Honours list followed
by his promotion to MTO and moving
to the "big house" at the top of the
Camp. Also to SQMS P Frost on being
awarded the BEM in the New Year's
Honours list. We congratulate them
both. RQMS .lim Fergus is now firmly
seated in the QM department and does
not foresee any problems arising in the
forthcoming months, The same goes
for SSM Joe Hardy with C Sqn. As this
article goes to press only a few months
remain in Wolfenbuttel, we look for-
ward to our new home in Wimhish. We
will strive to maintain the high stand-
ards of our Mess for the benefit of all
who pass through the doors of the most
exclusive club in the world.
