THE 9TH/l2TH ROYAL LANCERS REGIMENTAL JOURNAL Corporal Martha Richard Blell Corporal Martin Biela, Troop Corp. oral 3rd To, C Son died on 7 October 1985 when his Scimitar overturned during Exercise Grand Canyon. His death is an irreplaceable loss to his family. Regiment, Squadron. Troop and to his very many friends. Marlin Biela joined C Squadron, with whom he remained throughout his career, in [978 from the Junior Leaders Regiment, He had previously been a keen member of St Benedict's School, Bury SI Edmunds ACF. Martin was a natural soldier and a very gifted one. His grandfather had been a Hauptman in the imperial Ger- man Army and his father had served with distinction in the Wehrmacht during the 1939—1945 Wart Martin rapidly made his mark both at work and play. He was a fine Gun- nery Instructor. was promoted Lance Corporal in late I982 and to full Corp- oral in May I985, He was a stalwart member of the Regimental and BAOR Volley Ball teams, He was a popular member of the Corporals' Mess and a very fine example to the junior soldiers in the Regiment. He exemplified those words of the Commanding Officer in his Foreword to the 1985 Regimental Journal ”1 see our young NCOs acting as splendid ambassadors o! the Regi. ment in all sorts of roles and i hope you all feel as proud of their achieve- ments as we do," Martin was a splendid ambassador in BAOR. the United King- dom. Northern lreland, Norway, Cyprus and Denmark, both for the Regiment and for the Nation Martin was not only a very good soldier. He was a kind. courageous and courteous person. The Regiment were touched and honoured by the decision of Martin‘s parents to permit their son to be buried with full military honours in Hannover Military Cemetery on 15 October 1985. Martin was carrying out the injunc- tion of our Regimental motto. to the last second of his life, the words ‘lch Dien' — l serve. We are proud to have known him and to have served alongside him. Our sympathy and affection go to his parents, Mr and Mrs Alfred Biela. his brothers Timothy and Christopher, and to his sister Helen. as well as to his fiancee Fraulein Heike Wilke, We both feel and share their profound sense of loss.
