THE 9TH/11TH ROYAL LANCERS REGIMENTAL JOURNAL Ex White Knight The team (L to R) Tpr Thomas. LCDI Hammond. Lt Zeidler. Lt Cooke tated. The RAC championships held during the last week was invaluable experience and the team performed well to finish second overall. The Divisional championships was again held at Axams in Austria. It was fortunate we chose to arrive at the meeting a day early as the snow con- ditions were miserable and therefore doubled the journey time. Remembering the main lesson from Verhier which was the importance of skiing as a team, we watched other Regiments drop behind through failing to achieve team results. With a magnificent effort in the down- hill race, we managed to steal third place overall from the Royal Hussars. The downhill amuse had a vertical drop of 500 metres and with a length of 2000 metres; the team averaged a time 62 of 72.95 seconds (98.7 kph). The col: lection of good results in this race in- cluded Lt Cooke 4th. Tpr Thomas 5th, LCpl Hammond 7th and Lt Zeidler 9th. At Axnnts we said goodbye to LCpl Tildesley who returned to camp with the Langlauf team. In his first season racing. he managed a very fine 47th which will be useful for his initial seed- ing next year. Qualifying again for the Army Cham- pionships, the teams sadly lost Lt Cooke for six races, when he rweived an injury to his knee after a nasty, but spectacular wipe out during the first race of the meeting. Thus the remainder had to ensure they all started and finished the courses in order to achieve a team result. Tpr Thomas preparing his skis The three remaining members gal results in all but one race and, by the end. had improved on their original positions. In the downhill Lt Zeidler came 28th and Tpr Thomas 4lst. Now having attended two training years in Verbier, the Team is beginning to re-estahlish itself as a force in the» downhill skiing worldi Perhaps with‘ more skiing we can achieve the excellence of our seniors in the early sixties The period when the Regimental Team won the Army Championships with monot» onous regularity. This year’s team put‘ up a creditable performance and enti joyed the experience. Congratulations to Lt Cooke. LCpl Hammond and Tpr Thomas who were awarded Regimental, skiing colours on their return to Wolf-2 enbtlttel. i |
