Also for the second year in sue- ‘ cation the team qualified for the Army Championships at Fulpines in Austria. Leaving Wolfenhuttel on 14th Dec- ember. we arrived two weeks late at ‘ Verbier because of the Annual Gunnery THE 9TH/IZTH ROYAL LANCERS REGIMENTAL JOURNAL The Downhill Ski Squad Camp commitment. The six of us had a lot of hard skiiing with long hours spent on the pistes. to catch up on the other eleven Cavalry Regiment: The filial squad consisted of Lt Cooke (Team Captain), Lt Zeidler. 2Lt Pooley. LCpl Hammond. LCpl Tildesley and Tpr Thnmu and were picked from last year‘s learn plus a group of hopefuls. Capt Lewis (Pi) joined the team for a three week period as part of his annual exercise. and very quickly became known as ‘DOWNHILL ONLY'. (2Lt Pooley), specialist in skiing well beyond the limits of his talents Perpetually covered in snow, he wasted little time picking himself up from crashes and hurtling straight into the next disuter. [t is true to say that no adventure training exercise «copes incidents worth noting. As happened last year the Tiger coloured landrover had to return to camp after travelling only 166 miles down the autobahn. this time it wasn't forgotten ski boots. skis. gloves and lucky mascots. but the had to be fitted with a new engine. The four weeks training was very valuable, an enormous amount of ex- perience being gained by all. and was an improvement on last year, however, it still needs to be more racing—orien- |
