Regiment 9th/12th Lancers
Year 1986
Transcription 4;
Americans fired with their brand new
M16A2. However, the sun came out,
conditions were still and the patrol shot
well. beating many German teams and
coming fifth - an outstanding perform-
ance considering weapon disadvantage
The final day was the Blue Riband
event » the recce patrol course. This
patrol over 30km involved an advance
in contact through enemy held territory,
with particular emphasis being placed
on seeing without being seen and the
accurate reporting emphasis being
troop locations and dispositions. These
ranged from T62 tanks to German
bridging equipments, Despite the rig-
ours of the past week our patrol was
sharp eyed, fast and sfe. The accomp-
anying umpire described the 9/ 12L team
effort as the best recce patrol he had
seen in several years of the competition.
THE 9TH/IITH ROYAL LANCERS REGIMENTAL JOURNAL
The result was first place, way ahead of
the nearest (German) team.
So we come to the final results This
year not only did the team win the Aus-
lander Competition (for all the non
German teams) but we were placed firsl
overallt The first time a British team had
won either the Auslander or beaten all
eleven of the German Recce Batallions
. a truly outstanding achievementl The
celebrations that night were unbeliev-
able and in the spirit of the competition,
all the other teams were effusive in their
congratulations to this very special
team.
On return to the Regiment a parade
was held to honour this unique achiev-
ment. Brigadier Williams (Commander
Armour) from 1(BR) Corps compli»
mented the Team on their dedication,
courage, physical fitness and profess—
ionalism. Sadly our departure means
we are not able to defend our first place
next year.
Finally particular credit must be given
to Sgt Williams, the Patrol Leader, who
showed outstanding leadership. He in-
spired the team effort that produced
this magnificent result. Every single
member of both the patrol and the ad-
ministrative team worked very hard to
achieve this tremendous success. Mess-
ages of congratulations were received
from The Colonel in Chief, Colonel of
the Regiment, C in C BAOR. Corps
Commander, Divisonal Commander
and DRAC,
Editor’s note: This event happened
after I May 86 but it was decided to
include it in the last German edition of
the Journal.
