Our fixture list this season was dec-
imated by weather and operational
commitments, however, when the rug-
by team did take the field they played
a good standard of mgby. Preparations
started in late July, through August
training sessions in the afternoons
received enthusiastic support and gen-
eral fitness began to improve. Our first
game was an Army Cup match against
a good 32 Eng side, who exposed our
lack of match practice and pitch disc-
ipline. eventually running out easy win-
ners. Training efforts were increased,
evening training in the indoor riding
school being particularly useful. A
squad of capable rugby players with
some very promising youngsters in-
cluding Henderson, Glover and Melville
began to take shape. Team spirit was
good and this showed in a series of
entertaining games including good wins
against QOH and 2 RTR (Cavalry Cup
finalists).
Our next cup game was a disappoint-
ing one against Royal Hussars in the
Cavalry Cupl On a pitch more suited to
the “Boston Bruins" we put up a good
first half perfomance. only to give the
game away through unforced errors in
the second half. Spirits were restored
when we gained an impressive win the
following week against a 2 RTR team
bent on revenge for their previous de-
feat. The forwards and Henderson at
fly half were outstanding under the new
captaincy of SSgt Harries. The weather
allowed only one game in the two months
following the Christmas break, this
was against Hannover Station (minor
unit cup finalists). The Regimental Team
played superb rugby in ideal conditions
to run out 38—0 winners with the for-
wards, under pack leader Cpl Bilyard.
producing a powerful performance.
strengthened by the return of Army
player LCpl Whittaker. All the tries on
the day (seven in total) were scored by
backs who's handling. running and
defensive work was outstanding.
Following a loss to 13/18]! and a
good win against 1 AAC we came to
the final game of the season against a
touring Swedish side, Helsingborg.
Some of the players enthusiasm in
preparing for this match was a little
over zealous, particularly the evening
training in the Stadt Bier Keller the
night before. A well known fullback
explained that they had been celebrating
their forthcoming international debuts.
when an “Italian" attempted instant
appendioectomies on a well known pack
leader and a fly half. Eventually our
team won a good game and, all lived to
enjoy the memorable apres match enter-
tainments We saw our Swedish guests
off late in the evening having first ex-
tracted the wives of the team Captain
and our REME prop from the bus.
Overall the season has been a consid-
erable success, with sound contributions
from all involved.

Cricket
This was a disappointing season be-
cause the weather and commitments
stopped the Regimental team from
entering competitions. Except for the
R.A.C. Cup when we lost to The Blues
and Royals by the toss of a coin.
However we managed to play several
internal competitions. The inter squad-
ron knockout was won by A Sqn who
beat C Sqn in the final. The Single
Wicket Competition attracted nearly
fifty entrants and was won by SSgt
Figgins REME. The officers failed to
raise a team and. the Sgts Mess lost to
the Cpls by one wicket. However they
made amends by beating a team of
Troopers.
We are looking forward to a better
season this year with high hopes for The
General's Cup.
