With all Good Wishes for Christmas and the New Year from Brig . General D. Campbell and Officers 9th ( 2. R ) Lancers . Rejimental Christmas lead 1915 . LANCERS ' ARSENAL . TOMMIES ' RAG - TIME WAR . [ A Sergeant in the 9th Lancers writes . ] We often wonder what we are . First of all we are Lancers , armed , as you know , with lance , sword , and rifle . Since we came out here we added the bayonet to our arsenal , and sergeants carry a revolver . Now we are learning bomb - throwing . One day we are chucking a leg as cavalry , the next day we are trekking over ploughed fields as infantry . In our spare ( ? ) hours we dig trenches , then attack , and after that come back and groom our horses , that we haven't ridden . You should just hear some of the King's English that the fellows gently use unto each other , espe cially when some mounted troops are passed and we are panting and puffing from running across a ploughed field to finish up with a charge . One can hear " Look , boys , there are somo cavalry going along over there ; it must be nice to be a mounted man . " We have also had to learn a little bit of bayonet practice .
